Reddish Cordyline..Historical House...Native tree.
Not sure what the variety is.
This is -pretty sure- our native Bay tree ,Umbellularia california. I sometimes think its nice looking dormant. Has a great form.

Re: Reddish Cordyline..Historical House...Native tree.
Umbellularia californica is evergreen when grown in Cornwall; and called 'The Headache Tree'. Sniffing the bruised leaves is reported to cause headaches [I haven't tried that] and tree surgeons say that doing work on it leads to a severe headache and unsteadiness [again I haven't tried that!].
The deciduous skeleton that you show is wonderful.
It is notably pachycaulous right out to the terminal twigs and has startlingly bark.
Could it be Aesculus californica?
Or a fig of some sort? A young Ficus carica for example?
Chad.

THATS IT. I must have had a senior moment 5 years before I'm a senior. I should have got it right to start. Like getting the back of my hand wrong. Thanks

Look like they doubled. Not sure what their ultimate height it. I've seen one Red Star group push 20'. Since they were growing on the eastside of a 3 story townhouse they had good red color. In a hotter exposure they can turn brown leafed.

There appear to be different varieties of red Cordyline... One has the tell tale in your face red foliage whilst one has a very dull brownish colouration.. they different varieties I'm sure of it.. there are two of the dull brown varieties in our town and they seem to be slightly less hardy than 'red star's and have narrower leaves.

Taken through the front windshield..so a bit altered. Mission Peak. This is the area that is warmer them most of the bay area and also home to some large tropicals.
