A few palmy shots around town
I normally avoid town whenever possible, but got in to Napier a couple days ago and had my camera with me. I took a few shots with palms, for anyone interested. Nice to see palms are being used more often, although still only the common ones at this stage.

Re: A few palmy shots around town
I hate to step out the house most days. My dreams of hermitage give way to reality. Its wetter climate- the Queens look lush..and I was going to say you never see bangalows in parking lots..I have seen them in sidewalk openings and cant figure how they thrive so far from the home's garden. Ben,Love the Puka..biggest Mertya sinclairii I've seen. The SF botanical and Berkeley BG plants both are much smaller..younger maybe. The tropical look was slow to catch on with both of those BG's.

Re: A few palmy shots around town
Hi, Bennz. Although I am at 43º North, 4 degrees farther from the equator than you are, our climates are very much alike. Mean max hottest month 24 Mean min hottest month 16-17 Mean max coldest month 13 Mean min coldest month 6 Annual rainfall 1200 litres annual sunshine hours 1.800 (only) wettest month rainfall 155 driest month rainfall 59 Along the coast it is a 10A USDA zone Like you, I can grow jacarandas, avocados, etc. and palm trees like howea, archontophoenix, rhopalostylis, etc. Do you think I could grow a Meryta denhamii like the one in your picture? I´ve always heard they are quite fragile with low temperatures. If so, do you happen to know any reliable source of seeds in New Zealand? I would like to give it a try. Look this one I saw in Andalucia last week.

Re: A few palmy shots around town
Hi Julio,
I think I've seen M. denhamii in collectors gardens, but I don't think it is common in NZ. To be honest there are a lot (20+?) of Meryta species which I find hard to tell apart, and the only one I grow and see commonly is our native Meryta sinclairii. M. sinclairii is frost tender when young, more so than avocado or Rhopalosytlis, but doesn't need much heat. I've got seedlings coming up all the time, could probably grab some seed next time they are ripe if you want them.
Ben

I took this photo of a few days ago. You know,I'm surprised we have rainfall that "close" to what you have. But then again,we now go from wildly wet like last year,to drought like..the rest. A palmy area-
We are near doppelgangers!

Re: A few palmy shots around town
Thanks Bennz. I wouldn´t mind to try M. Sinclairi. I had heard about that species. If it similar to avocado and rhopalostylis needs and doesn´t need much heat, it would be ideal for my garden. When do they get ripe?

Re: A few palmy shots around town
Hi, Bennz: Yes, the climate all along the north coast of Spain is very mild. Some say it is warm temperate. Others, oceanic. Others, humid sub-tropical. Others, just mild Atlantic. Anyway. I do think it is subtropical, but only mínimum temperaturas wise. Maximums are oceanic. I can grow non edible bananas quite easily(most of them). Edibles are a Little more difficult. Once I grew “thousand fingers” and others, but didn´t get ripe and were quite small. Now I´m growing “Topocho” (from Venezuela), but, again, it takes too long to ripe. Maybe it is because it is growing on the north face of the house with very Little sunshine. Varieties from Andalucia and Valencia, and one I was given which came from Kenia(so he said that guy) Mango is a different story. I once grew one in a big plastic bag, against the house and it yielded a big fruit, which was very tasty. Those in the ground do have set small fruits but they suffer a lot from our lack of heat, sunshine and too much rain in Winter. As for Papayas, I haven´t been lucky so far. I do grow Babaco (Carica pentagona) and it has set big fruits for the last 3 years. Currently, I´m growing the following (sub)tropical fruits: In the ground: avocados, guava, feijoa, chirimoya (annona cherimola), syzygium jambos, carambola (averrhoa carambola), eugenia uniflora, psidium cattleianum(lots of fruits), all the citrus (including lima=citrus aurantifolia),pasiflora edulis, solanum quitoensis (but the wild variety, not the commercial one), litchi, cyphomandra(solanum) betacea, chayote (sechium edule) In pots: casimiroa edulis, guanábano (annona muricata), jaka (artocarpus heterophyllus), lúcumo (pouteria obovata), macadamia (macadamia integrifolia),longan (euphoria longana), canistel (pouteria campechiana), I tried jaboticaba (myciaria cauliflora) but, no way! Other people are growing Physallis, and others.

Re: A few palmy shots around town
Mango is very marginal. So far in all of the bay area,I've only seen two . Mine and one even larger in Fremont ( mall palms and Pepper tree area) Success does make for very sweet fruit. My advice is ,either start with the small fruited Asian species that really are more tolerant of cold OR a Valencia Pride or Baileys marvel that both have a great reputation for fast growth. The "condo" Mangoes are best for the semi tropics. VP is used a lot around Melbourne I hear. Manila's are California's most popular.

Re: A few palmy shots around town
Hi Stan, Have you ever tried growing Annona cherimola? I see Sacred Succulents nursery north of you is selling A. muricata calling it a zone 10----but I thought you might be tempted to try various Annona species. Thanks!

Re: A few palmy shots around town
No,But I might go for Cherimoya. I don't doubt Annona could be done Ted...but it might take much less effort to get almost the same thing with Cherimoya to do well on less heat and be more abundant. I pre 1990 had fruiting Cherimoya I grew from seed from a fruit from Safeway. I kept telling myself- do it again. I just forget..then the season to buy them passes again. Now,with Covid..the nursery that used to sell varieties like El Bumpo or Booth...stopped this summer.
