Cgf
So in 2008 I bought a red Iochroma from the aforementioned emporium. I always fancied trying to grow the red version I have a blue one growing outside and it looks a picture.
So imagine my surprise when I went to water the plants over wintering in my celler. What a fabulous flower but deffo not Iochroma I think I have a Solandra, but which one, anyone know? I have given a few cuttings away so you will need to adjust your labelling.
This plant is only 2ft tall so a flower is a bonus as I believe this plant is a climber

Re: Cgf
I assume the one you sent me is likewise a Solandra Kev? I have the and white and wanted a red to complete the tricolore! I was outbid on eBay and you came to the rescue ... Or not!!! That said, it is still going strong and I would be more than happy with the consolation prize!! Back to eBay then!

Re: Cgf
Nice solandra, Kevin. As Stan says, most surely S. Maxima, because it is the most common one. Does it smell like soap? I bet that flower has been open for 2-3 days before the picture was taken. I mean it because of its colour. I have one in the ground which is a monster, it only grows and grows. It set only 2 flowers 2 winters ago because it was quite sunny. Not this year. Let it grow bigger and propagate it fromm cuttings, which is very, very easy. This one is in AndalucĂa. It covers the whole slope of a hill.

Re: Cgf
Sort of related..If you want a actual tropical tree that will flower by a window? Spathodea. Or as a container plant. I might order one..Too many plants on my list.

I don't know if anyone remembers Neil King from the old UKOasis forum but he lives in central London. He found a Solandra growing happily somewhere trained against a front house wall - been there all through the cold winters. He begged some cuttings from the chap - who was pleased anyone noticed! - and gave me one to try which got planted out in 2016. It melted away at -2C I guess needed more wood to stand any chance at all.

Re: Cgf
"Daves Garden" Rate them to z 8b. I wouldn't trust that rating. I have seen them bloom in some of SF's cooler foggier areas along with being large vines. Maybe grow it larger in a pot to have a chance in the UK. They do grow tree like stems.

Re: Cgf
I know this Solandra Paul. It's in Chelsea near The Chelsea Gardener and has its roots in the basement garden and would have probably covered the whole 4 storey house by now if it didn't get pruned back every so often to cover just 2 levels above pavement.
