What I suppose I should have owned up to was being a grateful recipient of one of Chad's tubercules, though I am sad to say there is still no sign of life. Maybe no too late? I also got a thing from Will Giles (who got it from Urban Jungle) that must be a taliensis form/hybrid but can't remember the name for the life of me. Anyway, a no show so far for that, too.
I noticed today that a couple of the bog standard garden centre bedding begonias have re-appeared. They were quite nice, as I recall, with mottled leaves and (I think) yellow flowers. Or red. If I remember or don't get too muddy I'll take some pics tomorrow.

John Jerrard links it to 'Chen Yi sp.6' .
The Eric Hammond introduction via Crug is a very superior clone!

Here is a pic of that begonia. I have two coming back quite strongly.
I was at a client's garden yesterday and noticed that some I put in there have also started to show. He is near Stanmore and rather colder than here - I would guess from other damage he sustained to plants that he saw -8C or so. These are nothing special - going by the name of Begonia 'Non-Stop' and can be bought by the strip! It seems this is one of the colour ways - not all of them have returned - but I can't remember which colour they are. I guess I will find out. Still, at around £2 for 6 plants they hardy break the bank if replaced each year.

Begonia taliensis
Well, we said late June for it to show.
I hope it grows fast now, the days are already drawing in.

Fantastic that it's come back, Chad! It does seem to be pretty hardy - albeit a late riser.
I've planted mine out from the greenhouse in the last week - it's biggest leaf is about 8" across.
My Begonia 'Benitochiba' was left planted out, and I was coming the the conclusion it had had it - but that too is showing some small new shoots this week

Re: Begonia taliensis
Just bumping this one up again. I got Begonia taliensis from Crug Farm back in 2008. I had kept it in a pot and overwintered it in the cold greenhouse. It was always a tense wait until it re-emerged in June. This year, it didn't resurface in the main pot, or in the two smaller pots I'd put little divisions in. It looks like a vine weevil casualty. I was uncharacteristically sad about this as it was a favourite plant. However, a couple of days ago, I spotted one small leaf of it tucked away in a border next to a whopping great Impatiens tinctoria. I forgot I'd tried a bit in the ground there. I shall now try to feed and cosset it in the hope of getting sufficient leaf growth to try Chad's propagation method.
