I am not sure whether you know but on the UKO I put up a few pics from La Mortella and the tree you speak off is there.
This should be the picture below but if not is the link.

Keith,
I got the chance to meet Lady Walton once while visiting London(2000) for the Chelsea Flower Show, and the garden had an exhibit at the show, and she signed her book for me. I agree it is an incredible garden, in a special climate, which is more similar to San Diego or Los Angeles than San Francisco judging by what she can grow there. I have never gotten to this part of Italy, but would love to see the garden personally. I don't think it is always a question of strict age with the Chorisia speciosa, as I have seen some bloom as 8 foot tall sticks in a 15 gallon can, shipped up from southern California. I think hot summers and dryish winters are what really suit this tree, and it absolutely loves the hotter interior valleys of Los Angeles on into Riverside County as one drives towards the desert. If you have the chance to fly into Ontario Airport in inland Los Angeles, you will see tons of them, all in bloom as early as September down south. They usually only bloom later, in late October or November here in San Francisco, and typically need the hottest, most wind protected spot to bloom their best.
