Unusual orchid??
Not sure whether this is unusual or not but it was behind bars.............looks very nice to my untrained orchid eyes though.
No doubt someone will tell me what it is and no doubt BQ will be selling them next year.

It's a Stanhopea, quite an unusual one, i have about 7 different ones, i think i have the one in the pic. if it is the same it's a hybrid called 'Chrystal', not the best scent for the genus but a reliable flowerer! My favourite Stanhopea is S. tigrina, the flowers are about 8" across the the scent is so strong you can smell it all around the garden from inside a closed up greenhouse! the smell cant be described, but if you could bottle it, you would be worth millions!!!!!
I very much doubt B&Q will ever sell them, th flowers dont normally last more than a week, two at the most! and generally they will flower through the bottom of the basket which makes standing them anywhere nigh-on impossible!
Great pic though! where was it?

Gareth as most of my posts have been lately this is in Madeira, have you been, as you are into orchids big time this place is a must see.
The orchid in the picture was taken at Betty Garton's orchid farm
Here is another that to me looked a little different too. I have just checked my hard drive and have another 50 photos from the 2 orchid farms we visited and will post later............large groan from the non orchid fanciers.

That one is one of my favourites, Anguloa clowesii, a species from central America. i have a cross of that one, i cant remember the parentage but its that colour yellow on the outside, but has thousands of tiny reds dots inside, i have a photo somewhere, will try to dig it out!
I have never been to Madeira, but it has been on my wish-list for many years! Looks i will have to try and go soon!
As for the photos, keep them coming! I have enjoyed them all so far!

Gareth, you have just got to go the second orchid farm as it had the best display I have seen and will ever see it was unbelievable.
I should have snapped a few up for you had you sent me your shopping list.
The orchid above is one we bought Gongora galeata as Jackie quite liked the look of it...............any tips??
Betty Garton now grows her orchids in Eucalyptus sawdust have you ever heard of growing orchids this way or have you tried yourself.

Hi Michael, that was Jackie's shot with her £100 off the internet with a 3 inch screen and 6Mp does quite a decent job for a little compact.

Dont fret too much! The difference with Gongoras is they are truly tropical orchids, they prefer warmer, more humid conditions, again with air movement, if you have a well lit, warm bathroom, or better still a wardian case like thing that should be fine, what i also should have mentioned is, many Orchid growers, even in-experienced ones have different experiences with different species. I have trouble growing Phalaenopsis (moth orchids) in the orchid house, but they thrive in the bathroom, a friend of mine has the most spectacular Phalaenopsis wall in her Orchid house, which i pretty much identical in conditions to mine! Hopefully you will have more luck than i did!
Waterlogging is a problem for them! but they dont like to dry out completely! they wont require a cool rest period, but they will need to be a little drier in winter, and its the same thing for their summer holiday, just put them out a bit later, and bring them in a bit sooner!
I will find a proper refence on conditons for you if you want!
Gareth
