A true Oasis 15 minutes from home...
Some background. I live a block from Mission Bld.This Oasis is 15 minutes away down Mission bld. Near the famous Niles Canyon, an area once so beautiful it was the "Original Hollywood" in the silent film days. Charlie Chaplin and Tom Mix made movies there before the dry Southern California took it all away. Alameda Creek, runs through the canyon ,so it's a riparian area. This palm oasis is very close to the canyon and has obvious signs of subsurface water all year. For one,the grass stays green when the rest of California turns gold and then there are these self reproducing Washintonia robusta's. By the dozens large ones, look down and hundreds of seedling palms all over the place.
Untill it was graded to remove a fire hazzard it very much looked Tropical. More of everything. sOme remnants left -including some full grown CIDP. In the photos you see one palm much taller than all the rest..that palm may have been the original palm that started the whole grove 50-80 years ago..before this area was surrounded by city.
I was in a hurry, half the photos were blurred..but i tried in a area where i had to pull over to the side from traffic doing 60 mph!

They are Mexican fan palms Kandi with a few large Canary Island date palms,Acacia's and native Sycamores,Willows. A self sustaining grove 800-1,000 miles north of southern baja California.
