If you go to countries like Malaysia and Indonesia you see a lot of wild bananas. They are typical pioneering species of open pockets in forests, landslides and places which have been logged for timber and roadsides. You see rthem a lot in secondary forest but not so much in primairy forests.
In tropical America its Heliconia wich inhabits similair habitats as Musa.

In tropical Australia you get quiet a lot of tropical Asiatic plant species I guess.

Tom,
It sounds like Musella lasiocarpa would be a better choice in your situation; smaller habit, tougher/more wind resistant foliage, and hardy to your level of winter cold, although it might lose its leaves in winter. I know it is not a Musa, but it does give a similar look. This one grows easily here in northern California, but I found it won't tolerate deep shade in winter and survive...
