Bamboo- Borinda papyrifera sizing up nicely...
Howdy folks
Been a good for the 'boos so far- watch for the big culm pics...NEXT year
Anyhoo- now I've stopped digging bits off, borinda papyrifera is sizing up nicely. Still a way to go yet but it's already overtaken some of the Phyllostachys...

Ooooh, that looks very nice indeed.
I wonder if I can find space in my garden for one...

looks great
Looks great Mark ,.
How big is the culm ?
Adam, with Borinda papyrifera it's less about space than finding a source of Borinda papyrifera . There was a waiting list at Jos VDP's place in Holland, perhaps not these days , but still very a rare plant. It's pretty hard but Andrew in Holland lost all his culms last Winter, Andrews plant is coming back not I believe. But that was about six years growth frozen off

Nice One Ewen looks like it's doing well there.
Phyllostachys Nigra- thats like swearing round these parts if it were up to me it'll be in the swear filter. Got to go really
There are many, many more bamboos worthy of that space- papyrifera probably tops the list IMHO.
It really is a special bamboo, it seems to be a fairly tight clumper, very upright at first with the older culms drooping over time. It will need some space to achive maturity, but it'll be worth it
Cheers

Mark - My papyrifera (from your goodself) is doing very well but hasn't produced any culms this year. It's in a 30 litre pot and has 3 decent sized canes to 10-12', plus a number of smaller canes. It gets well watered but I've not fed it hardly at all this year. I'm thinking it needs to be released from the pot? Whether I have space is another thing.
Any chance of a few more photos of your place? It must have changed drastically since I last visited. Can you manage any wide angled shots?

Hi Mark- glad it's still doing ok, a little odd it hasn't sent up any shoots yet, probably the pot!
It's wildly different from your last visit some of the paths are now in full shade with tree and bamboo cover overhead- going mad with the ferns at the mo-
Will try and get some wide shoots, for some reason I seem to stick with the close ups

I second the motion on the wide shots. Include the Pond please as I need to how well your taking care of my Water Lily collection, I'll be by to take them all back one of these years .
A wide shot of the Shanghai 3 would be good too. A few pics for the guys over at Bambooweb too.
Call you later
Steve

The only one of mine that's sized up this year is Yunnan 4 (B. lushuiensis) which has one culm which is a smidge under 2" thick. To be honest though, a few of this year's culms are smaller than last year's.
My S3 (thanks Steve) has finally put out some proper culms which are about an inch thick.
Interestingly, Phyllostachys aureosulcata "Spectabilis" hasn't put up a single culm and produced very few last year. Where is all that energy going?
My P.dulcis which, for the past two years has produced one very large culm and 2 or 3 "average" ones, has done very little.
The Otatea appears to be dead.
P. vivax "huanvenzhu" went walkies big time this year and I've had to chop almost every culm as they appeared in the lawn
"Damarapa survived the winter with surprisingly little damage and is pushing up some healthy looking shoots.
The plant I bought as P. dulcis (as oppposed to my actual dulcis which was bought as something else , seems to be either violescens or iridescens with distinct purple bands appeaing towards the end of the first year of each culm.
The P. bambusoides "Marliacea" which came from Ewen still looks tatty despite putting on some reasonable growth last year. I'm currently waiting for this year's crop but am not expecting anything great.
Apart from that......... not much to report.
