Aloe ciliaris in bloom..
A more compact than average ciliaris as passerbys tend to keep it pruned.

Your yellow-flowered Aloe sounds like Aloe tenuior.

Re: Aloe ciliaris in bloom..
A.ciliaris flowers twice a year here. Mine climbs to 10ft tall, ciliaris is about the only true scandent Aloe and grows very fast, very attractive orange flowers, likes its water, keeps its roots shallow. Makes a great display, but needs controlling. I believe there are four other scandent Aloes, not sure which they are, anyone know?

Re: Aloe ciliaris in bloom..
Stan, Is that at your place? Is there a cross between ciliaris and striatula? It would be a good hardy aloe for northerners.

Re: Aloe ciliaris in bloom..
Kelern, that Aloe and the other like it with yellow flowers I got from a magnificent Oakland garden in the 90's where there must have been a half dozen(6) giant clumps of the plants close to 6' in height and more around. Years ago it was bulldozed for a new building. Oakland is virtually frost free, but quite cool all year. So,if it thrives in Oakland doesnt mean its not tender, but does mean you must live where summers are warmer! The photos are of my plants here 20 miles south of Oakland, warmer but no hot climate by any means.

Re: Aloe ciliaris in bloom..
I havent seen a A. ciliaris grown locally that was actually climbing another plant, and they arent exactly a conventional groundcover...sort of in their own category.

Re: Aloe ciliaris in bloom..
I have an Aloe that I grew from seed, collected from a plant labeled Aloe ciliaris, which it clearly wasn't. I have now identified it as Aloe gracilis. Although Stan's plant looks much smaller and more compact, I think it may be the same species. There is more than one named variety, or it could be down to growing conditions. Mine is a large, robust plant, forming a big, sprawling clump about 4 ft high. It is a very damp tolerant Aloe, in fact I think it loves rain.

Re: Aloe ciliaris in bloom..
Yes, the photo was taken in June. Many SA Aloes have both summer and winter-flowering forms, depending on whether they are found in the summer or winter rainfall region.
