Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Wow Eduard those ferns are simply fantastic a credit to yourself as they all look in pristine condition. Steve would have been drooling over such a fine collection as I am. The Cyathea's grow to huge proportions you do well to get them to over winter. I relented once and planted 5 specimens outside one winter, with protection, all died at -6c Which large leaf palm is in your conservatory?

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thanks Jose and Kev.
Kev, I suppose you meant the palm on the left side, which is the kerriodoxa eleganse, rear right is a bottlepalm [Hyophorbe lagenicaulis] right front a Livistona jenkinsiana.
The first two are from seedlings in 2010 and grow very quickly, I hope they still have a few more years, before the palms grew all against the roof and had to leave to early!
Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Love your Kerriodoxa Eduard do the leaves look white underneath pushed for a guess with those black stems I would have gone for that sp. The only time I have ever seen one of those was at Fairchild Tropical Gardens, Miami, you do well to keep it alive, it will be a sad day when it out grows its space......ditto your ferns too.

Eduard your tree fern growing skills are a real credit to you and i have never before seen them grown to perfection the way you can in a pot.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thanks Sylvan and Troy.
Troy it is not always easy to keep them well in pots, sometimes I have to intervene with root pruning, but mainly is to give the right proportions fertilizer at the right time like natural origin such as compost and blood and bone meal, a good stand location [penumbra] and always keep them moist.
Not to mention the battle with the elements, wind, bright sun and frost, happy it is getting better but you have to keep everything in mind!
Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Just spent the last few hours reading this entire thread, all 25 pages of it and it has been absolutely fascinating. Eduard your collection of ferns is breath-taking and your garden absolutely stunning, something the rest of us tree fern lovers strive for, congratulaions Eduard, everything looks magnificant.
Have you any Cibotium tree ferns in your collection or have you tried any?
Chris

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thank you Chris, it has become a real passion and addiction! Yes I have also tried the Cibotiums, unfortunately without success. Inside they were too big in the house and it was a hassle with the humidity, outside to dry and it had no chance at all, the only option was the subtropical glasshouse, but they grow also too big, so I give them away. Here one of the few pictures I made of the first leaf which rolled out here, They are beautiful plants, unfortunately no chance for me Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Yes that's a shame because they are beautiful ferns, I have two that I can't really supply the best growing conditions for but I am reluctant to give them away as I have had them now quite a long time. The garden gets little shade because of the absence of of tree cover and so the fronds get easily scorched and it isn't a particularly warm garden because of the southwest facing aspect, I t is often very windy. All tree ferns get very well watered because of drying winds or drying sunshine.
So frustrating
ZChris
