Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
I agree with Steve's conclusion when you want to do something with D.squarrosa. [better wait until spring] And never throw old parts of a D. squarrosa away, put them half way into the ground, often come spontaneously new plants! Gr. Ed.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
WOW the D.antarctica looks perfect better than they look in Tasmania ~ !
So you only use a very light sprinkle of blood & bone meal around the tree ferns is that correct ?
Troy

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thank you for showing us, your 'sheds' are superior sheds, better than we call sheds. They are somewhere between shed and greenhouses. Quite an amazing feat moving that lot in!
Your regime gives you beautiful plants.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Nice work Eduard, are you a builder by trade, those look quite impressive structures do you need planning permission for these type of winter greenhouses?

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thanks Kev, am designer by profession, but really like to build, a building permit is not necessary, but a duty to report, But this varies by municipality. Gr. Ed.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Wonderful stuff!!! I now have all my tree ferns expect one in pots. My DA's have filled their 70 litres tubs in one season so I will by trying your root ball trimming method next spring. My Cooperi and Medullaris are likely to grow very quickly (still youngsters at the moment) so might have to build a structure similar in size to yours, but sadly, I don't have your skills, so mine really will be a shed.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Yes Troy, we have a few more, and let's start with the C.tomentosissima, this one I bought as small tree fern in a garden center labelt as C. australis! Got it about 6 years, and does well here, 2009,
2010,
2011,
2012,
Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Well there goes the myth that "the fern formerly known as tomentossisima" is a dwarf plant. Fantastic growing, without question.
