A great story, well told. The timeline pics say it all. I don't have a Cyathea medullaris...yet.

Re: Treeferns after 40 years
Hi Steve/ Mark, the pictures were taken with an old Zeiss Ikon camera of the sixties. manually adjustable, and that was not always good! in institutions far away you see a deviation upper right. From 2009 I had my first digital camera, and everything went better. Especially the colors in New Zealand looks with different light! I did some test with the polystyrene for use on the C.medullaris, because here the frost goes to 30cm deep, and the isolating works, soft soil in de tent.
Kev, in some time I take pictures of the C. medullaris, he is now busy with leaf number 8 and 9 , wait until they are finished. The tent will be 4m high this year, I try to keep the leaf at least 3 pieces! because It takes too long in the spring until he is beautiful. This means also that I should build a double-walled tent, to prevent the leaf of freezing off, a new test!
Here a forest with C. smithii's, if you like this I start a short inpresie of the trip in some time, especially tree ferns! But as you know a lot of work [scan] it well take some time.
Eduard.

Some imspring photos. Thanks for sharing. It also proves that cyatheas don't need large pots to grow well.

Re: Treeferns after 40 years
hi, back to New Zealand Pongas, and now the D. Squarrosa [ Wheki- Rough tree Fern] which accidentally dried out in winter 2008/2009 the whole crown was brown in 3 weeks time. Outside he did not grow anymore until I decided to take a good look, the whole point of growth was covered with roots, nothing could get through
I decided to carefully cut the root cap off, to see what fortunately went well, underneath were 8 new rolls, they were a lot smaller, but I was glad that there was growth. That summer I left it for what it was.
Next spring I took the fern from the pot and saw that the roots were rotted,
There was to 1/3 of the trunk a clone [pup] to see, which meant that there was still life. Later that year I sawed under that clone and cleared that part off the trunk and wrapped it with moss and packed with plastic.
The next year I took everything off, and saw new roots!
For stability I left a old piece off the trunk and cut the rootball off.
And re-planted it.
A recent photograph of the crown is not what it once was, but increases every year,
Eduard.

Re: Treeferns after 40 years
Beautifully grown again. You must water it diligently.
A couple questions - 1) So the original crown dried out and died, or it was overwhelmed with roots? I'm unclear on which. Clearly, the original crown is growing again very well. 2) You air layered new roots and cut the stem because it was getting too tall?
Your tree ferns are an inspiration to see.

Re: Treeferns after 40 years
Hi Tom, the trunk is dehydrated, and thereby cut off from the root ball, it was dead! The frond was also parched, and the growing point was covered by with roots that grow upwards [ not dead], so there could be no new fern leaf out. then I decided to create a new root ball to grow. Therefore, the cutting and moss, for new roots. I would have preferred the trunk preserved, but unfortunately that was not an option. Gr. Ed.

Re: Treeferns after 40 years
Thanks Eduard, now I understand. That is really odd - the roots died, but the crown survived. Nice save!

Re: Treeferns after 40 years
From the motherplant I picked several clones-pup, and raised them successfully, this was in 2007 now there is almost 1 m trunk, and the frond is how it should be, it will take some time befor the motherplant is recovered,
Eduard.
