Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Work in progress!
I started with the winter preparations in spite of the mild weather, you never know, it may so turn, and then it's too late, I had a lot work with the big C.medullaris, it is very high and I want to protect the frond against breaking of the hard wind gusts and better growth next year, it is time to buy a higher ladder!
Eduard.

Im amazed at how well you have done with these, I know they grow super quick but wow! Updates on how you protect the fronds at that height would be great, my medularis is slowly out growing my poly tunnel - not to mention phils brownii......

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thanks Ben, protecting you find on pages 8 and 9 of this topic, it went well until early March 2013, then I got a power outage about 3.5 hours! and finally a brown crown, hope it will succeed this time, we still have spring temperatures here 12 /14 ºC Mau, thank you, the spores grow was quite calm this year, only C.robusta and C. atrox var. atrox grown , the last pretty much, I have re-seeded again, mainly from La Reunion, make a brief report next week. And a Merry Christmas and happy 2016. to you to Gr. Ed.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
New ladder better opportunities!
With this ladder it is possible to protect my Cyathea medullaris still some years, but there are limits! Total height tent is 5 m.
Last Sunday winter started here, Be glad it was wrapped up in time, last night -7ºC today -1ºC
Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
5 metres wow! You must live in a sheltered area, I would need concrete foundations on a structure that large to stop the wind ripping it apart here! I think the local authority planning department might have something to say too

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thanks folks, Kev from Sunday is also provisionally done with the winter, here therefore + 10ºC @ Mau, I do not like it so high, but yeah the hobby That we have @ Phil, I just now catching a lot of wind, especially in the winter last week gusts of 60km / h. it held the position, it is tightly bound with ropes. On the ground [concrete border] is anchored, I can only get problems if the neighbors here complain, Fortunately still heard nothing Gr. Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Hi laszlo, end of this year 20 years old, came along as a little plant in a video box 10cm high from New Zealand in 1996
@ Thanks Tom.
Still do have some damage! Where the frond hit the bubble wrap the leaf is brown, it is about the outer leaves, so not so bad, The tent is a lot higher and have no additional heating applied, little naive!
Gr. Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Hi Eduard, Last week I visited the Frankfurt botanical garden and proved to be very interesting, but what was most curious finding the solution for the harsh winters of your medullaris ... a building just for it !!! A beautiful specimen planted and about 5m high , I hope you like it !! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFZ3qEbrMdg

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
You'd briefly near Maastricht only 300 KM ! You could drink some coffee here! I would rather work with a tent, but know what you mean, which remains nice dreams Gr. Eduard.
