Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
A mid-summer update, The ferns grow well, unfortunately the cyathea howeana did not survive last winter / spring, the leaves started to die! We start with the shadow plant a young tetrapanax it now starts to grow well,
The C. cooperi,
Here the D.antarctica on his definite place,
Working on a new mini flush,
Next to it is the C.revolvulum,
Now with 16 leaves,
In addition, the D. squarrosa suffers from sun damage! ,
The C. australis is still aclimatising in the full ground,
Than the C.browni and C.atrox, these grow well,
Similarly the C. lepifera,
A look at the backyard,
Here the little C.medullaris and C. tomentosissima,
The big medullaristrunk now more than 3m high,
A few species together all the way back to the C. viellardy, the C. spinulosa, for that the blechnum nudum and D. fibrosa,
The C. robusta for the first time outside and is now starting to grow well,
Eduard.

Eduard - re: D. antarctica
Do you really consider 3 new fronds a mini-flush? If so how many new fronds do you get in a main or big flush on D.a.?
It's been cool and foggy here and we've had several flushes of 3 fronds and hopefully 2-3 more flushes before autumn. I thought we were doing well! A strange thing hapened this year with the first flushes, the ends of the fronds were not in line with the central stem but off atn a slight angle, have you seen this and know the probably cause?
I'll try to measure trunk and get a pic in the morning.
john 15c and rain at long last.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Hi John, Here the spring flush has 20 a 25 new fronds and is on average 6 after,
With an adult plant in the soil, there may be up to 40 at one time!
It may be that your plant gets too little light from one side and then you get skewed outgrowth,
Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thanks so much Eduard, I will move the Dicksonia antarctica into more light as this spot faces north with a screen to the west. I suppose moving into sun should be done very gradually at latitude 44..
I got this 10 years ago as a 1L pot trunkless plant. The trunk is now 40cm tall. In the spring I put a pinch of very safe slow release fertilizer in the crown. The blue vertical hose is a two-headed mister which is directed at the crown and trunk and is turned on 4 times a day.
Best

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
It looks very beautiful John , I never pour fertilizer in the crown but always along the trunk and root, my New Zealand tree- fern teacher teaches that this can lead to burns, so be careful here Morning and evening sun is not harmful, the hot afternoon sun in summer can lead to damage [between12.00 and 15.00 hour] Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Eduard - The slow release fertilizer is IBDU which is the safest of all slow releases. I use it twice year in the crown but only about 1/8 teaspoon or less (.6ml).

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
The C.brownii I dug up and potted in spring has been dormant. It dropped the larger fronds and is right now at half a frond. We will see...

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
I finally got rid of the empty pictures of Photo bucket, it costs many hours to work out and reinstall the photos, I hope this will never happen again The latest update is coming soon Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Really nice! For a second there I thought all this was being done with a light snowfall on the ground and was thinking these must be pretty hardy palms! Hahaha I see its a white tarp At what temps do you bring it inside? We have had 47F a couple times and it didn't seem to bother it but I don't want any leaf damage....Thanks

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thanks Jim, the kerriodoxa stays in all year, here I do not have good conditions for this plant outside and it's too big and too heavy to drag!
Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Last update.
The Dicksonia blumei is doing well, but it stays indoors for better conditions all year long,
The Dicksonia Lanata that I received from Chris C. is also growing well, beautiful red glow,
A young C. Brownii [second attempt],
C. Robusta gets the good shape,
The C. spinulosa grows nicely in its small pot, trunk now 35 cm,
The contrast with the neighboring garden,
The Nikau is gone, which has been sold, because of physical discomfort, I going to sell all the big tubing plants!
I had a dream in 1996 to walk under the C.medullaris, this has long been fulfilled! Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Its now a fact that the big old Podocarpus tree's in my small yard are dwarfing almost everything I put it ground- ferns-coffee plants- Tree ferns. By the end of summer I have a hard time keeping more then 4 fronds on the C.medullaris. That's with watering it everyday or at least every other day. Its at least 10 years old now and with 5' of trunk. That's not the 1' or more a year they can do in the bay area. So,I have shade container ranch start up back there now. I wasn't thinking 2017 when I planted them in 1978.
