Rhododendron rex
Arturas, Thank you for sharing that product information with me. So you put the Covergaard enclosure over the structure you have built out of PVC or something like that?

Re: Rhododendron rex
Thanks everybody who replied to my post with comments and suggestions. I have checked the Rh. 'Markeeta's Prize' and it looks promising for me, but I can't find the supplier so far - plantago gave me 'not found' result. I, indeed, growing one of the Markeeta's Prize parents - 'The Honourable Jean Marie de Montague' - still first winter in Lithuania after arriving from Esveld nursery last spring. I did protect this hybrid similarly as the large leaf species with the protective hood - the plant is quite big already. Anne - regarding the protection - I did use some sticks made from dead branches in the forest around to stabilise the hoods, but in many cases just covered the whole plant with the hood as it was shown on the package cover (picture earlier in the topic) then tying the string slightly around the stem - the bottom part was covered with snow ~10-15 cm here. That is not best solution, but I was quite in hurry because of rapid temperature changes.

Rhododendron rex
Arturas - thank you. I am going to look up the Covergaard here on the internet. We had up to 51 mph winds yesterday and now they are predicting ice beginning Thursday night. In the meantime, temperature to be 60 degrees F. Exciting for meteorologists but not gardeners.

Re: Rhododendron rex
The weather is milder, but all the rhododendrons are well under the snow ...

Rhododendron rex
Arturas - that is a lot of snow, which should give them some protection. We have had ice, now fog, approx. 1" rain in the past three days, and heavy rain predicted for Monday.

Re: Rhododendron rex
Arturas, the typical size seedling is this size:
14-188 'Hardy Giant' x macabeanum, Bones yellow #1, Norman Beaudry, MD
The seedlings vary, mostly big leaf hybrids from the ARS Seed Exchange but there is a R. kesangiae v album too.
PS, my ARS Seed Exchange 2017 order arrived today. I feel like 'a kid in a candy store'.

Re: Rhododendron rex
Our low temperature has been 0F (-18C).
My ARS 13-194 o.p. arboreum ssp. cinnamomeum, Rosemary Hartman, Oregon did not get damaged. Since this was open pollenated, I think the pollen donor is hardier (I'm very happy).

Tim
All look great including that arboreum hybrid.
Here is arboreum v. cinnamomeum Roseum in southern NS, I've seen it get a slight burn twice over the past 15+ yrs. It's now about 2.5m tall. One near the city here finally packed it in last year - a record mild one! - it had frozen back a half dozen times over the past 25-30 years.
The second pic is of a similar arboreum but crossed onto brachycarpum Tigerstedtii., truss every bit as good and not quite as early.

Re: Rhododendron rex
John, thanks for posting those photos. It's nice to see a arboreum ssp cinnamomeum up in Nova Scotia. The BVT x cinnamomeum looks great and imagine much hardier too. I'm curious what my bloom will look like.
What temperature does cinnamomeum burn at? Or is cold duration a big factor?
