"santa catarina" queen palm
apologies in advance to those people who may have see the same question posted on other forums by yours truly.
just received some nice healthy seedlings of "queen palms" derived from plants growing at "2-3000' ft." (about 600-900m) in the state of santa catarina, brazil. the seed is supposed to have come from palm expert and occasional forum poster Nigel and the implications are that palms from these elevations MAY be better adapted to some frost and snow than the "typical" queen palms in general cultivation. has anybody here (especially in maritime temperate/cool summer areas) had any experience (and even better, some success
) growing this (or possibly similar forms like syagrus "abreojos")? FWIW, I have had good success so far growing araucaria angustifolia which apparently in certain montane habitats grows in association with a syagrus sp. that MIGHT be similar to the "santa catarina" form that I have apparently received---so the "company it keeps" MIGHT indeed be indicative of some increased cold resistance. any experience that the clever folks on this board might be willing to share on either cultivation or natural habitat would be greatly appreciated.
