Re: Schefflera delavayi
Thanks Tim!
The leaves of yours look different from mine, so I thought you might've obtained yours elsewhere. Mine looks more like the UBC plant in johnw's post (above).

Re: Schefflera delavayi
Schefflera flowers won't open up. I keep protecting it from freezes but winter is coming fast and I'm running out of time to create seed.

Thur,
Yes this is the same plant. This season has much less divided leaves.

Re: Schefflera delavayi
Tim nice flower inflorescense but I think, as you probably know, its not going to make viable seeds this year......fingers crossed for 2017

Re: Schefflera delavayi
Thanks for your answer Tim. The leaves makes it a fascinating plant. Keep us updated, I wonder what it'll do next year. I hope it starts flowering a bit earlier so it will have enough time to make some viable seeds.

Re: Schefflera delavayi
Some Schefflera species one never sees around here in the SF Bay Area, but the UC Berkeley Botanic Garden does have about a dozen or so more subtropical species, which aren't in the trade here. They do all have a degree of the Schefflera charms.

Re: Schefflera delavayi
The Schefflera does not enjoy cold too much. It was 8F (-13C) this morning.

Re: Schefflera delavayi
Kevin,
No protection yet. I did protect the bloom against frost in late September and early October as I was hoping to get seed. I placed a trash can over those 3 stakes and turned on a set of mini lights..........no seed.

Re: Schefflera delavayi
Hi Tim.... I see a lot of cold weather in the States at the moment. I hope your Schefflera survives but it does not look well in your pic. How is your Metapanax Delavayii doing ? I have finally got a plant and will plant in the Springtime along with five other Schefflera species including Delavayi.

Re: Schefflera delavayi
Hi Andy,
My Metapanax delavayi is dead. I protected it inside a wire cage wrapped in poly and placed a string of mini Christmas lights inside but it was still too cold. This is likely a zone 8a plant. Perhaps it can take brief drops into zone 7 temps but can't take long duration cold.
I also have Metapanax davidii which is still alive. This is clearly a half zone to a full zone hardier than delavayi. I typically protect davidii but have not yet. Davidii is not Hardy in our climate as all the branches above the snow line died last winter but our low temperature was -25C which is colder than normal for us.
Please post a photo of your Metapanax.
