NEWLY Planted Arenga Engleri
Hi there, I thought i would plant my potted Arenga engleri today. A lovely sunny late Winter day, and sitting on 16°c This plant is ( yet another ) experimental palm, which i have never seen here. So who knows if it will survive? - I don't mind experimenting with new palms, because you will never know until you try. I have had this outside all winter - bought it in May this year. Its only sold in the north island of New Zealand ( not many palm shops down here ) - So here it is;
New spear from side-shoot.
Central spear.
Trunk detail ( Suckering habit )
Arenga engleri ( front ) - Parajubaea t.v.t ( back )

Re: NEWLY Planted Arenga Engleri
That's a lovely looking A. engleri Albey. Keep us updated with its progress.
I have a potted one which got frost-burned several winters ago and it's only now just starting to look decent again as it's so slow. Maybe in the ground they're faster?

Hi Rod They are quite hardy to cold but put simply they don't grow down my way ,the spear moved 3 cm in 2,5 yrs they like really warm humid summers like Florida , Sydney , Brisbane etc !

Until Troy spoke up I was going to say they should do fine for you. I guess a potted one at UC Berkeley isn't the final word. From what Troy said,they remind me of Foxtail palms..up to the bay area cold,just don't get enough summer heat to grow basically. Troy..are Foxtails and Royals grown in Melbourne do you know? Melbourne has been compared to the bay area.

Re: NEWLY Planted Arenga Engleri
Arenga engleri has been a bit of a disappointment growth wise, as it does seem to greatly prefer more year round warmth to actually grow. For me here in Berkeley, it only adds one or at most two fronds per year, and has a strong tendency to bloom very prematurely, so the palm just doesn't develop much mass. I assume Christchurch is also on the cool side for summer weather, so I hope you've given it the warmest possible setting to encourage growth. Here's? it just stagnates with our typical below 72°F typical warmest days, but explodes in growth in hot and humid Florida weather.

Re: NEWLY Planted Arenga Engleri
One of my favourites and I had one once but planted it at the back of a bed where I forgot its existence as other plants did much better. I finally found it quite by accident, replanted it in a better spot where it promptly died.

Re: NEWLY Planted Arenga Engleri
The zeveral I've planted out did get regular irrigation, but not excessive to qualify as a lot. The one I replanted in my front garden is having to compete with a massive Morus alba street tree, which has its roots into everywhere that receives irrigation, including containers. The few I planted in less tree root competitive locations did not seem to be any faster in growth; the same two fronds added and one lost each year. I assume more heat, much more water, and much more frequent feeding would make a difference, but that's not what they got where I've used them.

Stan " Troy..are Foxtails and Royals grown in Melbourne do you know? Melbourne has been compared to the bay area." Melbourne is alot warmer in summer than the Bay area with many days well over 30 C http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/20130 ... 1301.shtml
