I wish I could say "Its too warm in my climate" but that wouldn't be true as this plant grew fine for two years in a pot in my even hotter driveway, then in the ground with other succulents. When I did dig it up? It was an Aloe with a big carrot-yucca, like root. Almost no fine roots in the clay. Or,they were so fine every one of them broke off. I would go with, the fine roots were just not there any longer. Here it is sad in the ground pre digging. Concrete chips seemed to help with color. At least I got that right. And today. In a mix of crushed lava and perlite with some potting soils. This is about a week after the before picture,so it seems to be doing well- not getting worse. |

Try it in a different spot Stan Mine are no maintenance and look good they need a fair amount of water in the summer season they grow in moist peat soil at high elevation in the Mountains of Africa |

I lost this species twice in a dry mediterranean climate, but I must confess I didn't water it a lot and drainage wasn't very sharp. But other Aloe species from South Africa in the same place have been withstanding these conditions for quite a long time. Our Summer nights are mild and plants from mountain dislike it. |

I hadn't heard they like peaty soils. Maybe the concrete chips helped more as a mulch. Not near enough But the mix I have it - sounds like the right thing. Thanks Troy. Pierre, they are touchy..I had them rot in my back yard in a weeks time years ago. This clone seems to have a much bigger will to live. Clay is never going to grow them. I now see why people who aren't in the fogbelt build elaborate raised planters. |

The best Aloe polyphylla I've seen growing in the UK are in the wet southwest on freely draining slopes. They like to be wet but not water-logged! Someone growing them successfully said they should be treated more like an alpine plant rather than a succulent, having snow melt washing through their roots system. Despite being in an area that receives maybe 70cm of rain, he still watered it every time he passed the plant. |

I could see how near gravel media would work in a wet climate..or here with plenty of water or at least often. They might be the only succulent to take to hydroponics. |

I've just met a gardener who's been succssful with this species in Southern France for 20 years. Apparently, the solution in a Mediterranean climate, is quite different from growing it in a fresh climate(I mean with fresh nights during Summers) : she explained to me the difficulty : here watering during the warm season often leads to roting, to avoid this it is advisable planting it at the begining of Automn, in half shade (avoiding scorching Sun) in order to water it as few as possible during Summer. Drainage of course must be sharp. She didn't mist the plant during Summers. All that strongly looks like growing alpine plants close to the Mediterranean, a challenge. This plant flowered several times. I'll show a picture . |

Nice save Stan. So you think the heat and sun got to it or was it lack of water? |

Thanks guys. I think it was all based on soils. They hate even loamy clay. David Feix said he puts them in gardens in native soils and they do well. I cant explain that. Mine began to look bad from the day it went into the ground. Looking back it was never going to adapt. We have had a long heatwave..its fine. |

I planted these polyphyllas in between rocks in almost pure coco chips (20cm), then there's pure and wet river clay. My garden is below sea level. This is their second year and they are totally fine with our miserable weather |

Just getting back online Kev. I still haven't got to all the passwords I need to fill out. But,got AV,Firewall and like that going. Those Aloe's are fantastic. Perfect and on the edge of getting the dizzy spirals kicking in. I think they do need some shade here. I had them in very light shade and then to full sun. Part shade looked better. |

Thanks Kev and Stan. Last winter they were fine, they had a transparent roof, but we had only -6 as lowest temperature. Now they are a lot larger and stronger, nevertheless I'm hoping for another mild winter. I think they are so beautiful I would never stop trying letting them grow in my garden. |
