Re: Rhododendron Sinogrande
My sinogrande from seed ex Peter Cox, his best selfed here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. You see almost every leaf shape on it but he, Kenneth Cox and Alleyne Cook say it's true sino.
The last photo is a sibling I gave a friend in Kishorn nr. Loch Carron, photo this spring. Atlantic is 75ft away with a bit of protection from the Isle of Skye.
Darn thing here leafs out on the one hot day in June and can get scorched if 80F. Detests warm and humid.

Rhododendron Sinogrande
John - those are both beautiful specimens of sinogrande. I am anxious to receive mine, even if it is not the true species. For the winter months, I will keep it indoors in a sunny window, as it is supposedly only hardy to Zone 8. I am Zone 6a.
When you say it detests warm and humid, how does the plant react to those conditions? "Scorched" in sunlight or even in shade?
Thank you.

Rhododendron Sinogrande
I have read on this forum and elsewhere that the selection at Glendoick for an in-person visit is not the same as what is offered in the catalog - i.e. sometimes the species Rhododendrons are not well-represented at their Garden Centre. Perhaps an order in advance will permit getting the plants one desires.

Re: Rhododendron Sinogrande
Anne - I'm sure you could call in an order from the catalogue and they'd relay them to the garden centre which is 1/4 mile away. Glendoick have just discontinued all mail order a few days ago due to a host of issues including Brexit.
My partner worked there in 2000 and luckily we got a big order together and bare-rooted them all at 2c in the garage, I care never to do that again. Plant inspector went over them then she came out to the Edinburgh airport to give us the paperwork as we were leaving. The rhodos took a long time to settle in after that ordeal.

Rhododendron Sinogrande
Bare root is rough on the plants, but gladly you got them home and settled in eventually. Thanks for the background.

Rhododendron Sinogrande
John - thank you for the temperature, etc. information on sinogrande. I am in the central US and it does get steamy here. We get many days at 32C (90F).
I have begun using 1/4" pieces of lava rock from Bonsai Jack in my planting mix. That or pumice are recommended for better drainage. Many of my species Rhododendrons are in pots.

Rhododendron Sinogrande
Mo -
-15C = 5F - - - - very cold. I am pleased to hear that your sinogrande survived that. Perhaps in a sheltered location?

Re: Rhododendron Sinogrande
I have a small sino from Cally Gardens Have had it about 4 years and it has hardly grown at all. Puts out a fresh set of leaves in spring, but is not adding anyt height.
Any ideas why??

Re: Rhododendron Sinogrande
Promising temp news on your sino. I wonder if Seattle lows come too early.
Adam - I suspect with wild collected seed coming to an end that will affect the availability of many spp. unless they have someone dedicated to do hand-pollinations.
