Re: Yucca rostrata flower dilemma?
I don't cut my yucca flowers, either.
This year my Y. linearifolia is flowering spectacularly. last time it flowered the crown divided and it grew two equal heads. This year double flowers!

Re: Yucca rostrata flower dilemma?
Paul, great looking double bloom! I hope you try to hybridize her.
Phil, some rostrata forms don't have a serrated leaf margin, but many/most do. People who live in Texas say rostrata doesn't bloom until 6 feet (2m) tall. I've heard many times a transplanted Yucca will bloom. This happened to me with a Treculeana back in 2003 after receiving it in 2002. Keep the bloom Phil and try to pollenate the flowers. If we can see a seed pod we can identify the Yucca. My gut says your Yucca may have some linearifolia genes. Rostrata seed pods will be erect while linearifolia will be pendant and fleshy.

Re: Yucca rostrata flower dilemma?
Andy, treculeana x linearifolia and opposite cross would be amazing hybrids. Please try to hybridize!
I'm trying to pollenate my Y. gloriosa/recurvifolia 'highway 421'. This unusual form is supposed to produce erect seed pods. It may be the hardiest form of gloriosa/recurvifolia in my garden. Many forms were killed above the snow line during the winter from hell (2014-2015).
Yucca cernua is sending up three blooms.
Yucca filamentosa x rostrata form #1 Benny Jensen is sending up another bloom, three years in a row. What a great hybrid.

Re: Yucca rostrata flower dilemma?
Haha Kev, it looks good in the glass! The treculeana looks good Andy but it seems your linearifolia is going to hit the roof. The schottii you kindly sent me is going great guns this year too. You have some great looking hybrids there Tim, I bought a few from a German site last year, elata x thompsoniana and pallida x kharlsruensis both are doing OK if a little small at the moment. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be letting my rostrata run to seed (it would require hand pollination as far as I can tell) as I want the head to have some recovery time before winter and need to ensure its roots properly. Maybe next time. Thanks all

Re: Yucca rostrata flower dilemma?
Tim... I have tried some pollination with another Yucca possibly Torreyi. If the Linearifolia flowers open in time I'll attempt some more Regarding Phil's Rostrata... it looks pure Rostrata to me. We now have Spanish imports that are more vigorous being field grown and look much nicer than their natural counterparts in Mexico. The market is awash with them in Europe. Phil.... glad your Scottii is growing well. I was after this specimen but they won't ship to the UK... another Spanish import on steroids http://www.egzotikuskerteszet.hu/en/pro ... .tpl&pop=0

Re: Yucca rostrata flower dilemma?
Phil I blame this on you as I have another Yucca linearifolia flowering now. 2 days ago I did not see anything they just seem to sneak up on me while I am watching the football

Re: Yucca rostrata flower dilemma?
Linearifolia seem to flower well in the UK and yes like Kev I have another Linearifolia flowering in the covered area. This yucca is in a state of flux and after nearly forming two heads last year is flowering again as well as sending out two new shoots from the roots
