New Growth on Rhododendrons
I particularly enjoy watching the progress of new growth on rhododendrons, especially species rhododendrons. I find the foliage more interesting than flowers on both species and hybrid rhododendrons. Here is a photo of some of my young plants. In the foreground are tsariense on the left and bureavii on the right. At the back are rex ssp. fictolacteum and fortunei ssp. fortunei, among others.

Re: New Growth on Rhododendrons
Another great thing about the Rhododendrons is that they fit in with the tropical garden, I just bought a brilliant red. Thats a very nice Image of the Rhododendron foliage Anne, many thanks!

Re: New Growth on Rhododendrons
I completely agree Anne, the flush of new, fresh foliage on spring-time Rhododendrons can be stunning. Here is R. yakushimanum, from Yakushima Island in japan. This species is unusual in requiring full sun for good growth. By the autumn most of the dusty covering of hairs has rubbed off of the leaves, but the undersides retain their dense golden pelt.
And of course the incredible flowers are a bonus!!

New Growth on Rhododendrons
Andy - thanks for the excellent photos. I have a few yaks in my collection - Ken Janeck, Phetteplace form, Pink Parasol, Koichiro Wada and Mist Maiden, plus some rhododendrons with the yak lineage. Here is my Koichiro Wada this year.

Re: New Growth on Rhododendrons
mine are behind yours but this rather caught me off guard
took the first photo of the rothschildii two hours before the next two photos. Blimey that was quick.

New Growth on Rhododendrons
Mo - thanks for the pictures. That new growth is irresistible. Katie - might be time to remove that flower truss so the new growth can emerge and the plant does not expend all its energy producing seed. The flowers look like they are finished now. Perhaps you have already removed the truss. If not, I would suggest doing it no later than about 2 weeks after the flowers have faded. Attached are some diagrams showing how to remove the truss. If you already know all this, so much the better.

Re: New Growth on Rhododendrons
Anne, I thought the flowers would fall naturally like.
I usually buy dwarf for the two dogs that died, this is my first large one (red) . It being very windy on the drive the flowers usually get blown by the wind.
Thanks Anne that file will be very useful.

Re: New Growth on Rhododendrons
Hi Katie, If you have azaleas, you can leave the flowers on the shrub. Same for the smaller leafed rhododendrons, called lepidotes. For the larger leaf rhododendrons (elepidotes), like in the first picture you shared, it is better for the plant to remove those spent flower trusses. It makes the plant look neater, it prevents seed production, and some believe it improves next year's growth. Good luck with your new rhododendron.

Re: New Growth on Rhododendrons
Flowers removed off the red, Thanks Anne. One thing about Rhodies and Azalias, the roots never spread out like flower roots, very hard rootball. Is that normal? its not lack of water, more I can overwater.
