Rhododendron & Azalea Flowering - Spring 2016
John W. - thanks for the information. I knew that Ron had left Rare Find but checked their online catalog today and that one is not currently listed. The hunt for choice Rhododendrons is often convoluted, and your background information confirms that. Thank you.

Nice looking baby Spellbinder. I can only imagine that the catawbiense x maximum genes will do well in your area.

Re: Rhododendron & Azalea Flowering - Spring 2016
I wonder how they were able to produce or find such a small shoot on 'Spellbinder'. These would likely root far better than normal ones.
Leach said 'Spellboinder' was not commercially viable - despite the fact that everyone wanted it - because the cuttings took up too much precious space in the bench, they took so frightfully long to root (when and if they did) and they had such poor percentages of rooting. I guess he was correct but that was stated just before the advent of tissue-culturing. In the late 80's I never could understand why Briggs was not keen on re-doing 'Spellbinder' or promoting it as I could easily have sold a thousand here. Our chapter bought 100 the year Briggs t-c'ed it, we had them grown on to one gallons in BC then they shipped them to us the next year.
Tim - A neglected hybrid which has very big leaves and would make a splendid hardy parent is Gable's 'Bramax' which is brachycarpum x maximum. It seems to be sterile but its pollen should be fine.
john 23c today ocean temp off Halifax is 16c, normal 5c.

Rhododendron & Azalea Flowering - Spring 2016
John W. - this cutting of 'Spellbinder' as well as several that did not root, came from the home garden of David Walylko, the son of Ray Walylko, now deceased and the former owner of W.W. Nurseries. This cutting was taken specifically for me after my long quest beginning in 2013 when I first spoke with Ray Walylko.
