This board is not going to have a fixed and permanent banner or logo. Instead, the header space is open for members who wish to, to create their own banners for temporary display. I've no idea how many people would want to do this or how many different designs they may come up with, but I'm thinking of having each design up for a month, at this stage. That might change depending on how many designs get submitted. The idea would be that contributors would submit a design or designs, and the moderator team will decide if they thought it suitable for display. The real name or user-name of the artwork creator would be displayed somewhere, perhaps at the bottom in the copyright section, during the period of display. The current banner consists of the main logo image which is a 100 x 510 pixel jpg, a matching background tile, which has to be the same height (100 pixels) but can be any width, and the transparent-background .gif on the right, featuring the text 'A forum for plantspeople who like 'exotic' plants and gardens'; all three are shown below. It is done this way because we are using the fluid version of this board 'skin', so the banner as a whole has to be stretchable. If any of the professional web graphic designers on board can suggest alternate ways of achieving the same thing, please speak up! In terms of style, designs should be graphic art not photographs or photomontage, although processed photographic images like this watercolourised photograph of an Epidendrum are ok; I'm looking for designs that are funky/primitive/fun/alternative, rather than serious and chocolate-boxy (orchid above not a good example in that respect). 'Gangsta' spray-graffito inspired designs would be fine, for instance. The board's name, 'Growing on the Edge' must feature in the design but there are no rules about size, font, colour etc - so long as it is legible. At this stage I'm thinking the transparent text-gif on the right hand edge will be a constant feature. Unless I'm convinced otherwise, the main image should be 100 pixels high and around 500 wide, and there needs to be the matching background tile to go with it. Email your design(s) to me, and I will set up a mockup for the moderators to consider. If several get submitted that we like, each will get its turn, in order of submission date. I've no idea where this will lead, whether it will be an ongoing thing or inspiration will dry up and we just rotate those that got submitted until/unless someone presents a new one, who knows? Its an experiment. Peter. Let those creative juices...er..run. Squirt. or what ever creative juices do. |

Here's my first attempt: I don't know how to do the transparent gif, but it should be straightforward for someone to change the existing one. The font would need to be Comic Sans and the colour white. You probably hate it! It's not as wacky as you've asked for, but I'm English and conservative by nature! |

Thanks Garry, I'll upload it later this evening. The tile may need to be re-jigged so the left and right sides join seamlessly, and I will have to modify the transparent gif if for no other reason than the current dark green text won't show up on your green tile. Drop in in a few hour's time and see what you think. Peter. |
