It has been bearing on my mind these past few weeks, that having lived near to the east coast of Australia since August 2006, I have not once seen the sun rise up over the Pacific Ocean. So, as I woke around 5am this morning (Sunday), I decided today would be first day when I did see it. In darkness, I drove down to Trinity Beach, about 25 km north of Cairns, and got there not long before the sun rose. There was a fair bit of cloud, but it probably added, rather than detracted, from the aesthetics. These below are some of the photographs I took. At this latitude, the sun rises straight upwards, it doesn't have the slanting trajectory that it has at cool-temperate latitudes, and so the sunrise happens fast. There was hardly any time to think, and certainly no time to use (and keep re-positioning) a tripod. A hotel's night-time lights still on in the pre-dawn glooom. Rugged coastscape looking south, with some dramatic clouds colouring pink from the soon-to-rise sun I didn't use a coloured filter here, the camera just decided to colour this one purple for reasons best known to itself. Ditto, though I must say I like the results in this one very much. This is much nearer the human-eye-percieved truth at that time, just before the sun rose. Here comes the sun! Using a young coconut palm to block the actual sun from shining straight into the lens. First rays hitting the palms behind me Like looking through rose coloured spectacles - pink sand. |

One more image, of Ellis Beach, from yesterday morning. This one I have tinkered with - I reduced the saturation to give it a faded, 1950's, 'Blue Hawaii' look. |

Very nice Peter. No question that the seacoast there is spectacular. If you asked me where these were shot, I wouldn't have said Australia - more like Polynesia. Tom |
