They're fantastic shots, Ewen! I particularly like the perspective over the tops of the palms in the big glasshouse (Kew?) Is that Steve's variegated T Rex at Phoenix Gardens in one of the shots? I don't have any as impressive as those, but did quite like a couple of these:- Pete |

Hi Ewen The Encephalartos pic was taken on the Durban Exhibit in this year's Chelsea Flower Show (I'd love to say I took it in South Africa - but sadly I haven't been!) I'm not sure how much help I can be on the technical questions. Both of the images you posted seem to have excellent clarity to me. The first is more vibrant, but that is maybe down to subject and lighting conditions? I use a Nikon D80 DSLR and am happy with it - though doubt its optical quality is on a par with Leica. when I first started with Digital a couple of years ago, I shot everything as JPEGs. But after about 6 months, and having read-up a bit more, I switched to shooting in RAW format. I did this primarily for the greater flexibility it offers at post-processing stage - but a definite added bonus was an improvement in image quality and clarity. Do you shoot in RAW? cheers Pete |

Cracking shots Ewen I would love to have some ferns in my garden like that The toad lily Tricyrtis formosana looks out of focus but the others look good and my own personnel prefererance would be the kew shot and the second last shot but then again the macro shot of the Leucospermum looks really good too. I think the 2 comparison shots do not come over the net overly clear, shoot me if you want, but its no use saying they are all fab is it or else you will not get a subjective view would you. |

Ewen - fun tour of 2008! I love the Cyathea/monstera shot in particular. That is a garden in Italy if memory serves, true? Talk about tropical looking. Pete - those ripe seed heads on that Encephalartos make my mouth water. Gary - a lovely composition, as always. Here's my quick selection from 2008. Not my most inspired year, but some good stuff: The other world view of Gapstow Bridge and the Manhattan skyline in southern Central Park, New York: A snowstorm in the local mountains last February: A great rhody, R. New Comet: And of course, my deep passion, orchids. Dendrobium moniliforme: Calanthe argenteo-striata: Let's hope 2009 is even better! Tom |

Just had another look of these pics and Tom that photo of Gapstow Bridge is award winning fab shot! Here is one from me perhaps not technically brilliant but this was taken in the middle of the Costa Rican rainforest from our tour bus. |

Indeed Kev - it looks quite bleak and stormy the day you were there. It was nice and sunny last time I went - but consequently it was seething with tourists... Pete |
