I just got back from Kyoto. What a place that is....I took nearly 500 pics. You may have heard of the "Golden Pavilion", Kinkakuji. It was our first stop and just brimming with people even though these photos might make you think it was otherwise. If you want to know more about the history and so on, check out this Wikipedia link about . Nope it ain't made of pure gold. Yup, that is real gold leaf though! Pretty awesome place. Got many more pics.... |

Beautiful photos Tom, what an amazing building. Love all the bells, it must sound great when the wind is blowing. What is the winged creature (?) on the roof? For some reason, I am reminded of the story of those Japanese monks who mummified themselves, so that their spirits could linger at their monasteries forever. After subsisting on nothing but pine bark for two years, they would finish themselves off by drinking turpentine. I believe the mummies are still displayed at the relevant monasteries. Have you seen any of them on your travels? |

Lovely photos Tom. I was lucky enough a few years back to be sent to work for a week with a group in Kobe. For once the fights meant that we had a day and a half free, so we all rushed over to Kyoto by train. Spent a lovely day looking around the amazing temples. Is somewhere I hope to get back to one day. |
