Interestingly it got down to -20c at Charlotte Pass one night last week- the third lowest temperature eve recorded in Australia. |

Ooohhh. -20°C! Must be high elevation to drop that low. Cheers, Barrie. |

Here in Athens we're keeping our fingers crossed for our first rain since a dramatic thunderstorm affected parts of the city on July 3rd. 2 private weather stations within a mile of me recorded around five times the average monthly rainfall in one hour. Even if it doesn't rain, at least things have cooled off a bit. Last night was the first time since the 13th that the temperature dropped below 28C (82F). The mercury hasn't quite hit 32C today, which is the coolest in 2 weeks. After so many days at 36-38 (97-100F) it feels quite fresh! |

Dave ... sounds like you'll need that rain when and if it comes. Here, we've had no rain at all in July and none is forecast with just 5 days remaining. With the exception of a hot spell (35°C to 38°C) in the earlier part of July, it's been very pleasant. Sunny mild days in the upper twentys celcius and cooler night temps so avoiding the AC much of this summer. Forest fire ratings now are considered extreme with several now burning throughout British Columbia. Cheers, Barrie. |

We had our rain, Barrie...about 5 drops of it! For Athens itself that's enough to signal an end to the "heatwave" and a slight drop in temperatures, especially at night. More rain to clear the dust away would have been good. We had enough winter rain inland that water shortages aren't likely here on the mainland (although western Crete is really struggling to keep 7-day water supplies going). Forerst fires, however, are still frequent...there's virtually no pine forest left in this Prefecture (Attica, where Athens is) |

It's an every year event. Average July rainfall in Athens is only 6mm (in practice that means nothing most years, but an occasional thunderstorm like this year which gave us nearly 30mm in a very short space of time), and most of the islands have an average of ...zero! |

July statistics from the personal weather station two streets away from me: Daytime maxima ranged from 29.4C to 37.6C 11 days 35C+ Only 3 days below 31C. Night-time lows ranged from 22.9C to 31.4C ( yes, that's right). To put that into perspective, the warmest night ever recorded in the UK was 23.9C. Athens only fell below that on 2 days in July - and one of those was a freak! The freak was July 3rd, and a sudden thunderstorm mid-afternoon. The temperature plunged 6.9C in 40 minutes, reaching 23.2C, and 26mm of rain fell in a very short space of time. The temperature then rose again, and the nightime low was over 26C! |

We have a cold front coming in tomorrow, with heavy rain, which will bring nights at 5ºC and 3ºC, but for now, wandering out into the garden at 1am to water a few Brugmansias on a dry 15ºC November night is pretty relaxing. Between the Brugmansias and the Abutilons, they've made it a highly floriferous late Autumn in the garden. |
