Well, Fukuoka city had its hottest August on record coming in at an average of 30.3 C. That blows out the previous record of 29.8 C set in 1994 by a half of a degree - certainly a significant increase. Other averages above or equal to 29.0 C for the month include: 29.0 C ('1966 and 2006 tied), 29.2 C (1995), 29.3 C (1985 and 1995 tied), and 29.4 C (2007). The averaged normal for the month (1971-2000) is 27.6 C. Not surprisingly, most of these have come since 1990 when Fukuoka's yearly average began to equal or exceed 17.0 C. The '66 record was high for that time, however, starting around 1960 averages in the 27.0-28.0 C range were common. Before that time it was perhaps a degree lower and in the early 1900's 26..0 C was the more common average. Clearly things have gotten more toasty here over the past hundred years. Shall I put another shrimp on the barbie? |

Well, September looked like it might be a record as well, but the second half finally cooled off a bit and it came in as the 2nd hottest on record. The normal is 23.9 C. The hottest years are as follows: 2007 - 27.0 C 2010 - 26.3 C 1999 - 26.2 C 2005 - 26.0 C If that weren't enough, this summer was the hottest on record for the whole of Japan. The deviation was +1.64 C for the the period of June through August. Month by month, the deviations were as follows: June +1.24 C July +1.42 C August + 2. 25 C Obviously that August deviation was the monster that put things over the edge. At present the running annual average for Fukuoka is 18.6 C, but November and December are usually quite cool, so I'd imagine that the year as a whole will not set a record...then again who knows? The highest annual average temperature for Fukuoka City was in 1998 coming in at 18.1 C followed closely by 2007 at 18.0 C. The normal average is 16.6 C. |

Will do Dave. Temperatures are dropping now - the forecast calls for as low as 10 C in the city by mid week, so we'll be another 2 degrees cooler out this way. In a way it is a relief after that insane summer, but then again, I'm not much for cold rain and clouds. |

I got down to 12.5C last night: the coldest night of the autumn so far in Athens. It's forecast to be around the same (or a bit warmer) tonight, then 20C for the next couple of nights (and that's at the airport. so probably a couple of degrees warmer here in the city). After the 25-30C nights of summer this feels very cool. But I have to remember the weather in London: 12.5 would have been fairly normal for a summer night, and 20C would have been considered extremely warm (London average for a July night is just 14C). Some parts of northern and central Greece have already had frost and snowfall. |

Do keep posting here Tom, it is fascinating. It seems summers in Fukoka are truly tropical, as warm as Lagos, Nigeria for instance. In fact, there are many places in the tropics that are cooler. Lima, Peru is near the equator and at sea level, but thanks to the cold Humbolt Current, the mean temperature of the warmest month is just 23.5! |
