After the warmest November since 1926 (most days in the early 20sC, average night over 16C), and a similarly warm start to December, it looks like Athens is in for a shock. We've got -2C forecast for Friday night (the first frost in about 3 years) and Saturday looks like it'll be colder than London, with a max of just 5C. Brrrr! Don't want this! I was literally shiverring the other evening when I was out...at 15C! |

Sudden shifts in weather seem to be common this year around the globe. If you're shivering at 15°C, you're gonna shake right out of your skin at -2°C Cheers, Barrie. |

Dave, I totally understand the change you are going through. After 20 years in Florida anything below 15 C seemed cold. Moving to Japan with its substantially colder winters (and importantly being cloudy as well) was a huge change - it felt like moving to a truly cold place. Of course the lack of warm inside houses doesn't help, most of which are maintained at 15 C or less. Mine was down to 8 degrees this morning, not too bad. January is the worse, but real warm won't come back until mid March. What is funny is that folks who live in Hokkaido come to Kyushu and remark, "man, it is cold here!" That's because they believe in insulating and heating their homes while Kyushu is a "warm climate" and doesn't need such things. Go figure Weather-wise, it will finally scrape freezing by tomorrow morning. It's all downhill from here! |

Yes. I've heard from folks in Hawaii that are "cold" when the temps dip to 20°C (68°F). A co-worker used to live in Edmonton Alberta and when temps there would drop to -35°C, they felt a warming trend at -20°C. (I couldn't imagine ) Cheers, Barrie. |

Ι've been to Edmonton to visit family. Thankfully, it was summer! Currently 22C just after 11am on Thursday. Last night fell to 16.4C, and tonight looks set to be similar. Then the wind is set to change sometime tomorrow morning, and temperatures will plummet. One site still forecasts -2C for Friday night, although none of the other sites I've seen are predicting anything lower than +2C. We'll see. In any case, snow on the mountains around Athens seems almost certain, which will be pretty to look at for a while. I think a lot of my plants will have a weekend holiday indoors. Even though I don't think it's going to get cold enough to kill anything outright, it certainly sounds like it'll be cold enough for long enough to stress a lot of the more tropical plants which are still actively growing (xanthosoma, colocasias, alocasias, anthurium etc). |

This site's forecasting the change to happen on Saturday night rather than Friday morning. But just look at how rapid the change is expected to be (something other detailed forecasts agree on): |
