Currently around 7AM and it's 2.8 C outside with light rain. Here's the forecast for the rest of the day: The bad part is that temperatures are forecast to drop well below freezing tonight, perhaps as low as -4 C and the snow is supposed to intensify tomorrow with the daytime high around freezing. Hmm....the test for my more tropical stuff begins today! |

Best of luck Tom hope you do not get the forecast temps it seems such strange weather this year. Here its been 12 C day and 10 C night time, which I realise is no comfort to you, but surely that should be your temps. |

At least we don't have to deal with the lows you all have to contend with Kev! As fate would have it, we were spared the snow since the bulk of it remains well to the north. It is cold however. The mercury bottomed out around -2 C, but now at 9:30 AM it has only come up a degree! We rarely see continuous below freezing like that and it looks like it will continue for another day. Not good. There is a lot of gusty wind which is keeping too much frost from forming. Fingers crossed on the real tender stuff like Platycerium superbum and Neoregelia 'Fireball' - both were covered with sheets, but I'm sure they aren't very happy right now. Kerosene heater cooking up a storm, on full throttle, but I can only get the room up to 13 C! The joys of modern Japan! |

I've rarely been so cold as the time I stayed with a friend in Tokyo at the end of January. Outside temps were hovering around 0 by day, lower at night. The house was built like an uninsulated portacabin. The only heating he had was one small gas fire in the sitting room. "Aren't you cold"? we ventured to ask. He looked very surprised at our question. "Yes, it's winter!" he said. |

Ha, ha Michael! Sounds like perfect Japanese logic. Not so cold this morning, just down to -0.5 C, and a hope of sun with temps all the way up to 5 degrees. |

Continued cold here with an average of 3.9 C for January so far. The average high has been 6.6 degrees and average low 1.1. The last time Fukuoka got that cold was back in the '80s, specifically '83-'85. At my location you can shave another degree off those averages, perhaps a bit more, so we've been seeing at or just below zero almost every morning. Over the weekend it remained below or at freezing for nearly 40 hours. Cold for these parts. Snow is remaining on the local mountains above 400 meters, day after day - again, fairly unusual. My Platyceriums are looking tired. The Neoregelia is looking toasty... Currently sitting at a balmy 4.5 C and cloudy. Not my cup of tea! |

OK, this isn't funny anymore. This forecast is for Fukuoka City which usually runs a couple degrees warmer than at my place. By far this is the coldest continuous weather I've experienced here. I know those temperatures don't look like much to you all in Europe, but they are taking their toll here, bit by bit. The average for the month is somewhere around 3. 5 C for the city and colder here. This morning I woke to -2 C again, on a near par with coastal temperatures in Hokkaido! Yuck. My Platyceriums may bite the dust this winter - too bad. |

It just isn't warming up over here. The current official average for the month is 3.9 C, broken or tied only 12 times in the past 121 years on record. This weekend is slated to be cold with a 50% chance of snow. So much for a warm January in Fukuoka. So, January 2011 is lucky 13 as it were! Without meaning to sound like a broken record, it has been colder at my place, closer to the average for the nearby town of Iizuka which sits at 2.5 C for the month. This morning was no exception: Fukuoka stayed above freezing (3.4 C) while we descend into hell again (-2.0 C). I didn't count, but I'd guess that at least half of the mornings this month started out at or below freezing. HELP! |

Nothing below 5C so far this month (but the next couple of nights might get colder). Mean of 13.3C for January so far. Hardly warm, but not really cold. |

The month finished out at 3.8 C, the coldest January in recent memory. Funny that it came directly after the record heat in August (30.3 C). This year has been a stressful one for many plants on both ends of the game. |

Bad one Tom how is the Cyathea australis looking now? Here in central England our average for Jan was 3.9 C I suppose 2 dips to -6 C did not help that but Jan has been quite normal for us. As regards to the weather I think when you keep hitting all time lows you have grounds to grumble about it. EDIT Just spotted your pics on the main board Tom nasty! |

Hey Kev, I don't want to complain, particularly after the December you all suffered through! Just reporting on the goings on here in "warm", southern Japan. In the end I think there will be few actual casualties - perhaps some weak specimens of this and that and an orchid or two. I am praying for my Platyceriums though... |
