17.8 C
Well 17.8 C in the shade is not bad for 19th March in middle England pity there is not a lot to revive with the warm temps. 12 C at 10.30 pm feels quite pleasent .....how about you?

Re: 17.8 C
By coincidence, 17.8C is also...the average daily maximum I've had this month so far. We only managed 16 today, but we've had plenty of 20-24C days.

Re: 17.8 C
Cracked 18 C today, suddenly everything is looking dry, I have had to soak the tree fern trunks to see if I can coax some life back into them.......1 of 6 showing. I suppose your new country could not support tree ferns Dave?

Re: 17.8 C
According to my friend Marios, they sort of (barely) survive here for a while...but are just bare trunks in the summer. The fronds can't cope at all with the high temps and low humidity for months on end in summer.
There are few areas with cooler, more humid summers where a tree fern might survive for the summer. However, the same areas tend to be in the mountains up north and the ferns would die in the winter cold (the temps you had this winter would be completely normal in many parts of central and northern Greece).

I should imagine one of the most least likely plants you would expect to see there Dave.........which will probably please you as did you not call them ferns on sticks or something? Weather is fine again today 2.6 C over night and 19.8 C today soon be shorts weather our warmest March day for 5 years.....liking the trend so far!

Re: 17.8 C
Hey Kev, time for me to be envious of those temps! It has been averaging between 0 and 5 degrees in the mornings with highs only up to around 10-12 C in the days, even with sunshine. Can't say that is typical for us here though.

Re: 17.8 C
We've allready had our third summer day so far (>= +25°C). Yep, it's a wonderful spring, no late frosts in sight till the first half of April (forecasts allways > +5°C during nights) and afterwards one shouldn't expect any on average.
Seems we get a better growing season than the crappy one of last year!8)

Re: 17.8 C
Warmer days than Athens, that will surely change soon, Dave!
That's one of those freak events we seem to get more often over the last years. In 2007 and 2008 we got these heatwaves of up to 32°C in late April. I hope this April won't be that hot, because in both cases the summers turned out quite crappy.
Last year was similarly uneven, first a cold winter followed by a too cool spring, a freakishly sizzling hot July, the second hottest on record, and then in August cold and miserable again. It's time now for a summer like 2003 methinks!
Nights are between +5 and +8°C at the moment.

Re: 17.8 C
Forecast for tomorrow is +18°C only. No need to be envious Mr. Shpence! Was nice today going for a walk in the woods. We collected bear garlic and walked among carpets of flowering anemones and wood sorrel.

Re: 17.8 C
I'm glad, it cooled down to 18°C only. These warm temps are too much for anything with delicate flowers. Rhodie and Magnolia stellata flowers got torched!!! My 2m tall stellata is more of a brown clump now. To have some days above 20°C in March is normal, up to 24 also. But this was too much. My Camellias are in full swing, I'm so happy that their flowers are tougher. Jap. cherries are in the city are almost finsished, this is quite normal, my autumn cherry has finished its (second) spring bloom two weeks ago. Our native anemones, who flower by thousands on the floors of the woods are Anemone nemorosa (Windflower). But really weird is how far developed the sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum) is: Normally it starts flowering around May 1st and is ready to use, when we brew a slightly toxic punch/bowle of it the "Maiwein". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_wineI've had my first glass of it for this year on Sunday!!
