Wow Steven, then your spring warm up is quite a bit faster than ours here in southern Japan - surprising to say the least. The cherries are near peak now, probably in another 2-4 days. I have the European A. nemorosa (blue form) and A. ranunculoides - both are in bud just now, should be flowering by the weekend. The native A. keisekiana has been flowering for over a week now. Oddly enough, bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) blooms very early in the eastern USA, but is flowers quite late here - usually late April into early May. Go figure. Due to the cold temperatures many plants are flowering all at once that normally are more spread out. Prunus for example have been odd this year. P. mume typically flowers late February and is finishing up by the first week of March. This year they didn't come into flower until March and are finishing up NOW! Similarly, P. campanulata typically peaks mid March, but is peaking now this year. The main wave of Yoshino cherries are just coming into full flower - a tad late. What is odd is to see P. mume with a few flowers yet and P. campanulata flowering right alongside the Yoshinos. Strange weather this year! |

After a cool week we are back to summer weather again. Yesterday we got +28°C. The warmest day of the year so far. I stopped counting the "summer days"... |

We desperately need rain, no propper rainfall since March. Btw, the summer has started since mid April. The week before last was coolish, with frosts in some areas (this were the early Ice-Saints) but summer weather is forecasted till open end. Right now we have 32°C, same temp as yesterday. I don't hope we'll have to pay for this later in "real" summer, so that we will get endless rain and cold 15°C. Personally, I think this turns into a "2003 Reloaded" version of summer. Now I must get out to water the garden, as every second day |

Steve, What has your rainfall been trough the months March, April and May? Spring in Holland was in the most parts the driest ever, sunniest ever in the whole country. All the months where warmer then normal, April even broke the record from 2007 (Warmest april ever), Spring is warmer then normal too. June starts also warmer then average. The humidity numbers are quite low also for weeks now, even saw humidity below 20%. We need about 200 mm of rain before water level is back to normal. I have got a very sandy soil, so i guess i do need even more to get back to normal. Looks like next week going to give us finally some good rain with good temperatures as well 20-23C, so not cold. Need to give the water loving plants like banana's water every day but they still do no grow because it's too dry. Plants like Washingtonia going like a rocket! Robbin |

Robbin, can't tell you the exact figures, since the national met service decided to relocate our 200 year old weather station to the suburbs right to the dutch border, so data is missing until they build up the new equipment. Despite this much cooler and windier location now, this spring was warmer sunnier and drier than any in the 200 year old historic row of data. But judging by other stations in the vicinity, sunshine hours are now 200% above average, mean temps are about 2-4°C above common monthly means and May has according to my personal thermometer a mean of 19.8°C which makes it a high summer month. Rainfall was about 25% of what is normal, only. Since friday we got heavy thunderstorms that hopefully fill up the ground water. As David noticed, watering isn't as effective as real precipitation. Some waterlovers like Bletilla are behind but my Tricyrtis, typical autumn bloomers, have started flowering. Stewartia, usualy staring in July has finished bloom by now. Since March/April we are one month ahead phenologically and it rather seems, this is speeding up. So I will have the first winterbloomers in flower by September! Should the sunny and dry weather go on till the rest of the year, we'll end up with over 2400 hours of sunshine and probably all the "old" records of 2003 will be broken reagrding both temperatures and sunshine hours. |

26.7c today in middle England and 22.5c at 9.30 pm with a minimum of 17c last night.........I think this is summer! What temps do you guys have as on watching Formula 1 racing over the last few weeks the German grand prix and Hungarian grand prix have looked decidedly wet and cool? |

Stats for July: Daytime highs from 32.2C to 40.4C (average 36.6C). Nighttime lows from 25C to 29.6C (average 27C). 1 minute mean, 30.8C. No rain. Far less humid than July 2010 (as low as 17% on 2 days, usually 25-30%), although some nights have been sticky (up to 75%). August is usually no different, although there's a chance of a thunderstorm this afternoon. |

Well Juli was 2 degrees cooler then normal, very wet and gloomy! More an autumn month then a high summer one.The 6 wettest in the last 110 years! So probably not very likely we will get a similair one the coming years. A year ago it was 4 degrees warmer, that was a rrealy good Juli! Alexander |

Well that was not bad for September with a low over night of 17.6c and 19.2c at 8.30am another month of this Algarve type weather and the garden would have been back to half decent. but I fear its not going to happen. |
