Re: Sydney weather
Westerly winds have been strong this week but not that cold most of the time. On Saturday it was 24c in Sydney with a dry westerly wind. Unfortunately I wasn't in Sydney but in the Central tablelands (beyond the Blue Mountains) at about 1,000-1,200m asl. Here it reached only about 12c, I think, and the wind on exposed ridges was a real cold blast. I was reasonably prepared with warm clothing, but it does show how a bit of knowledge is important when it comes to the weather.

Re: Sydney weather
After a virtually rainless period during July and August it's no surprise that two houses were lost west of Sydney in bushfires today as gusty NW winds raged. A cool front is on the way; cool enough to produce snow on the Alps, but temps here will be close to average. Still, a relief after what we've had; 30c temperatures in two of the last four days.

Re: Sydney weather
Luckily we had some decent rain a few days ago. Still, this September is likely to be a record again for maximums, with an average maximum of 23.5c expected for the month. It is due to clear skies, persistent westerly winds and warm sea surface temperatures.

Today it reached 37.3c, which was the third highest October temperature on record.

Re: Sydney weather
Well, it's nothing new really; these dry spells with occasional heatwaves often occur in spring. Most of my garden are established plants. The azaleas get a bit droopy at these times and the Livistona australis needs regular watering.

Re: Sydney weather
Thirty cars were incinerated in a grass fire at Sydney Olympic Park today as the temperature hit 35c and the winds reached up to 80km/h in parts of the Sydney Basin. Thank goodness tomorrow only 20c with a shower or two.

Re: Sydney weather
Today was a hellish day: the winds gusted to 100km/h in the Blue Mountains and up to 90km/h in Sydney. The temperature reached 33c and the humidity dropped to 10% at times. Dozens of houses are believed to have been lost in bushfires around the state. An easing of conditions is expected over the next few days and the worst is probably over.

Re: Sydney weather
Last night the moon was bright orange, not for Halloween, but because of all the smoke in the atmosphere.

Re: Sydney weather
Phil...this will seem like a question that only an obnoxious American could ask...but my curiosity is killing me. During these Australian brush fires, is the smoke odor notably eucalyptus-like, or do the oils just get burnt to the same tar-like substances that form in any other wood fires? I know that when one is actually in the bushland, under normal non-forest fire situations, there is an odor of Eucalyptus in the air. Heck in Williamsburg, VA, about 3 or 4 20 ft. tall plants sometimes used to perfume an entire parking lot. (before our last really cold winter, 1994, killed them all to the ground) Even though they were in a walled garden about 200 ft. away. But I assume when one is walking around downtown Sydney, one usually doesn't smell Eucalyptus. Or maybe Australian's noses have all zeroed it out because it's the default smell there. In any case, sorry to know Australia (or at least NSW) is again facing such fires. Hope it's over for you soon.

Re: Sydney weather
I think the smoke is eucalyptus-flavoured because it is quite pleasant, although I don't really have any experience of non-euc fires to compare. I do agree that we are desensitised here: I rarely smell eucalyptus except maybe on a hot day. Meanwhile, tomorrow looks bad with hot winds and 35c predicted in Sydney. Today was really strange: it was warm and muggy with light rain and it was hard to believe that the Blue Mountains are under such threat.

Re: Sydney weather
Apparently the defensive lines held in the Blue Mountains today despite the hot, windy conditions. Tomorrow will again be windy but much cooler with only 14c being predicted for Katoomba and 23c for Sydney. The largest blaze in the BM was caused by the army doing explosive training. Unbelievable. It reminds me of when a few houses were lost in my area years ago because Sydney Water were welding a pipeline in similar conditions.

Re: Sydney weather
Some good rain early in the week ended what was becoming a scary dry spell. You can stop worrying about me now
