Re: Sydney weather
After a dry winter, it's good to see everything awash again after an unusually wet August day. The temperature only varied between 12.8c and 14.4c today.

Re: Sydney weather
Last night a slow-moving ECL parked itself off the coast, causing mayhem. The top wind gust on the exposed coast was 161 km/h, and there was heavy rain and a thunderstorm which seemed to go on for hours. Snow fell in the Blue Mountains up to 10 cm cover.

Re: Sydney weather
Wow it's been hot lately. Every day seems to be in the low thirties. I'm glad we got that rain a couple of weeks ago. It's hard to believe it snowed. In the blue mountains then

Re: Sydney weather
Yesterday it reached 40c in most suburbs a bit away from the coast as an unusually hot airmass was drawn down from northern AU. Today it is back to normal but the heat is moving up to Brisbane.

Re: Sydney weather
It's been an amazingly tropical week- thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening five days in a row. I got hit by hail on Thursday evening while waiting at the station on the way home from work. It was either bouncing or being blown under an awning, and it stung a bit, although luckily it didn't hit my head.

Re: Sydney weather
Phil I love checking in on these reports once in a while. 15mm in 10 minutes indeed surprises me for your climate. That can happen here - in fact a long standing world record for brief rainfall was once right here in Maryland, though I believe it has been superseded. It seems like this would take an atmosphere saturated with humidity throughout the column followed by some kind of extreme frontal forcing to happen but I'm not really sure of that. (though that is what happened for the Maryland record - the difference with our midwest being that the 800 mb temps and humidity are higher here than elsewhere, as moisture can move up from the Gulf, in from the Atlantic, etc) OTOH, I think of Sydney as perhaps being humid right near sea level...but not so much at elevation. Which is why Canberra has cooler nights, for example, than the US mountain resort town of Asheville, NC. Even though its elevation is lower. Maybe in your climate the forcing mechanism is the hot dry air in the center of the continent?

Re: Sydney weather
You certainly raise some interesting points, David. I think the storm was partly caused by hot continental air, but moisture must have come from somewhere, probably the tropics. Often a trough stretches all the way down from the Timor Sea and interacts with local moisture from the Tasman Sea. As for Canberra: yes, it has a climate more typical of areas further inland but bear in mind that some highland towns such as Katoomba are humid, especially in summer..

Re: Sydney weather
Today was the hottest March day for 11 years at 36c, but a blustery southerly change saw wind gusts up to 102 km/h and a rapid drop in temperature down to 22c within a short space of time.

Re: Sydney weather
One of the most severe ECL events has hit us yesterday and today, with 119mm falling in Sydney to 9am and another 35mm since then (and it's still raining). Winds gusted to 135km/h on the immediate coast.

Re: Sydney weather
A cold pool of air moved up from the Bight, causing an amazing hailstorm that resembled snow in some suburbs and caused collapsing of several factories. Up to 50mm fell in an hour, and lightning delayed some major sporting events.. This was unrelated to last week's record rainfall, but of course came at a bad time when soils were already saturated.

Re: Sydney weather
Five consecutive mornings at 7c or below at Observatory Hill for the first time since 2010 - this is the result of an unusually cold airmass sitting over us at present. Frosts have been widespread in the outer suburbs. A cold change is starting to move through so that should stir things up a bit and put an end to this sequence.

Re: Sydney weather
Kev, that is quite a variation; it must take some adaptability on your part.
On Sunday the coldest change of the season will arrive here with gusty westerly winds, reaching gale force on the ranges. Expected maxima: Sydney 14c Katoomba 4c with a snow shower or two Orange 2c with snow showers
