I've decided to create my own thread.
We've had 10 days in a row over 20c, including one of 25.7c, which is very unusual for mid-winter. There is cooler air on the way; today we had some pea-sized hail with a thunderstorm.

Yesterday was rather incredible along the NSW coast: a southerly change dropped the temperature from 30c to 19c in 10 minutes at Bellambi just south of Sydney. At nearby Wollongong it dropped 6 degrees in 60 seconds!

Well, today it was 34c here but only 12c max in Hobart, which shows how cold air drags warm air in front of it.
Now it is still 25c at 8pm but only 11c in Melbourne. Needless to say it will be cooler here tomorrow.

After a coolish spring, it's suddenly turned tropical with heat, high humidity and heavy thunderstorms. The garden's loving it.

37c here today and still 33c at 9pm. Still, this brief heatwave won't last long.

We've had the coldest start to summer in 44 years (since 1st December) going by the maximums.
The minimum Monday morning was 12c, the coolest in 16 years for December.

Speaking of Sydney weather the system that has caused all the flooding there is going to hit the North Island and upper South Island of New Zealand tonight and tomorrow (Saturday) central pressure of system 981 hectopascals predicted wind gusts up to 150 kmph.Stupid thing is I fly out of auckland (Hopefully) tomorrow afternoon and fly to Sydney .So I leave in the head of the beast and land in the tail as it stretches right across the ditch (Tasman sea)
Maurice.

Phil your updates are interested to read.
Sounds like your summers are similar to Boston's. Generally pleasantly warm, but punctuated by a sort of continental variability and some heatwaves. Lucky for you Australia is an island that is not connected to the south pole...so these periods of variability do not affect the cool season as much as they do the warm season. We'd have the same thing if we sunk Canada into the ocean (sorry Canadians) but then our midwestern "breadbasket" would become like the center of your continent, i.e., not growing much bread anymore.

The most amusing thing that happens with Boston's weather is once every few years a "Bermuda high" incorrectly parks itself well to the N & W, south of NYC and off the coast of New Jersey. The SE Coast and Mid-Atlantic get an onshore flow instead of a southerly flow, allowing them to stay relatively mild. The "wraparound" thus covers the mid-Atlantic, the Ohio Valley, and the interior Northeast. When this western wind hits Boston, it is very, very hot. So, very occasionally, Boston and Miami will be the hottest 2 cities along the US East Coast! Does something similar ever manifest there, where Sydney soars higher in temperature than Brisbane and perhaps even Cairns?

Hi David

Yes, it happened today actually. We had a 29c maximum, which was the warmest for 70 years in May! Brisbane only had 27c; Cairns was 29c as well.
This was caused by northerly winds dragging down warm air ahead of a change, which will lower the maximum to 19c by Sunday.

We had a savage east coast low (ECL) come up from Victoria today; it's caused major flooding down there in Gippsland.
The day started off sunny, then gradually clouded over; by 4pm winds were gusting over 120 km/h along the coast and rain was pelting down. There is concern for coastal flooding because the king tide is also this week and will combine with a huge swell to give possibly record tides.

Sounds nasty Phil will the wind do damage to your garden?
Here on Diamond Jubilee weekend we have had plenty of rain half a months total for me in one day on the day the Queen took a flotilla of 1000 boats down the River Thames......hows your luck!!

No, luckliy no damage. I'm about 10 km inland, and there was a rapid drop-off in wind strength. It was probably up to 100 km/h here at times; some of the western suburbs didn't get above 60 km/h
