Re: Tree ferns from spores
Hi Mau, last year sowed not much news, just the C. atrox var. atrox and C. robusta, the last species sown for a friend of mine . End November still the three tree fern species of La Reunion , C. glauca, C. Borbonica C. Excelsa and Sadleria cyatheoides of a British fern friend, last developed well from the La reunion species is still no sign of life C.Atrox var. atrox, C. Robusta, Gr. Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Hi Eduard,
These species are very interesting especially Sadleria . Take this into consideration. I acquired a D.sellowiana spores , I hope to get lucky .

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Hi Edward, nice to hear that develop my spores of C. atrox well, is really a "monster"! We must meet again If your Sadleria cyatheoides be giving us absolutely. We had -9 C but at present it is very windy and mild.

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Hi, last year I got fresh spores from Chris C. of Sadleria cyatheoides, I have them right then sown and now the box is full,
Yesterday I pricked the first 24 plants and so they look now,
I hope I get beautiful plants and that they get that beautiful colors,
Eduard.

I found this film about the life cycles of ferns well explained; Ferns-Pteridophyte life cycle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4YtOT0Z6EkEduard.

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Sadleria cyatheoides comes out the incubator box to harden,
The Cyathea robusta came outdoors for the first time [last week], thinking it will be a huge grower, has already suffered from dry air and fire damage as the sun came to the leaf!
A picture from downstairs from the conservatory upstairs,
Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Thank you Chris, it would be more beautiful if the garden would go up from my house, like you can see in this picture, I see this when I work in the conservatory, the most beautiful time of the year when everything begins to grow as it does now Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Update "sown tree ferns of the last 10 years" and the further progress of this and a received specimen.
In this topic it has been discussed before that not all purchased or received spores are also the correct tree fern species, in this story I will specifically address this at the end, namely the seeded C.intermedia where Steve Pope and I had a long discussion about it and did not come out, it is a pity that Steve is no longer with us, in all probability I now have the correct name of the species, Steve was right it was not C.intermedia!
It is obvious if a tree fern species has specific appearances, we also recognize this species as such, unfortunately that is not always the case, sometimes you have to wait until the plant is a bit older to be able to determine it properly, I have a number of plants where it is clear from 6 months because the characteristics are specific.
I start with the clearest, C. Alsophila spinulosa I had these spores from Remco 2009 and sown in December 2009, I'm going to show all the photos of the growth stage, it was quite a job to find them out over the last 10 years, here we go, the seedbed of 2010, C. Alsophila spinulosa,

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Eduard, that's a fantastic achievement to get from sowing spores to that beautiful trunked specimen in 10 years! A credit to your skills. An amazing tree fern with that slim trunk and those spines! We have some very frosty nights this week in southern England. Time to start bringing the Cyatheas indoors/ into the garage. Plants get bigger every year; have to watch not to get a hernia moving the pots!!!!

Re: Tree ferns from spores
A great write up Eduard and kudos to you for getting them to such fab ferns loving those spiny stipes!
I am undertaking a similar idea with the Cyathea vieillardii spore, I received from you, may try some outside at some point. I assume you have some big versions of this Cyathea?

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Thank you Valdy and Kev, yes I have enough material to do something good with it, there is still not much visual material to be found!, I will do my best Kev de C.Vieillardii will definitely pass by, this is a beautiful tree fern and already has 70cm trunk and also pictures from its natural New Caledonian environment. Valdy, here today we also started to drag the sensitive plants in here, also frost to -3 / -4ºC 1a2 nights from Sunday, the high tree ferns in the open ground have to endure it! Without protection ..... Continuing with a very nice species that Ro has bred from spores, Ro, Remko and I then worked together to set up a large collection. The Dicksonia blumei is one of the most beautiful Dicksonias, unfortunately very rare and a slow grower, this one is also 10 years old, I got it from Ro as a mini tree fern without its specific red color,

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Really enjoyed the photos, Eduard, thanks for posting.
I still have the Alsophila spinulosa you sent me (can't believe that was Nov 2014!) by , on Flickr

I am intrigued by your comments about the ID of Cyathea intermedia. I have been growing this species from spore received from Rare Palm Seeds in 2010 and until now have been happy with the ID, although I recall Steve Pope had doubts about the name when the sporelings were still young. I don't have as many photos of it over the years as you have used for A.spinulosa and D.blumei but here are a few that hopefully show its development over the last ten years.
Can understand why Steve initially had doubts ...! by , on Flickr
At four years: by , on Flickr
At six years: by , on Flickr
Recent photo at ten years old, taken after trimming and bringing inside ready for winter: by , on Flickr
Would be very interested to know how this compares with your plant - does it look like the same species? If so, what are you calling it, if not Cyathea intermedia?

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Hi Chris, thanks for the comment, nice pictures you show, I am glad you show our seeded C.intermedia, I think I am almost certain that it is the species I suspect! Can you take a detailed photo of the crosiers / frond, I have the photos of the presumed plant from a French forum and will have to ask the person who lived in New Caledonia if I can post the photos on G.O.T.E
I will show you the beautiful Dicksonia lanata that I got from you and that came outside for the first time this summer, the last 2 years our summers have been very dry which was not good for the tree ferns the general humidity was much too low , and I didn't get any higher with all the spraying just for a few hours .... It has become a nice plant although it also has a tendency to crawl!
Dicksonia lanata,
