Rhododendron & Azalea Flowering - Spring 2016
Rhododendrons and Azaleas bloomed fairly well for me this year. I usually do not have a problem with deer (I live in the woods) but this year they got most of the azalea buds. Here are a few pictures showing the blooms for 2016 in my collection. R. yuefengense Azalea hybrid 'Gregory Bald' R. 'Nova Zembla' with 109 flower trusses Azalea 'Amagasa' Azalea 'Ben Morrison' R. catawbiense 'Boursault' Azalea 'Amagasa' R. yakushimanum 'Mist Maiden'

Rhododendron & Azalea Flowering - Spring 2016
Thanks, Tim.
This is not on the "flowering" topic - this is Rhododendron 'Teddy Bear' - new growth spring 2016.

Teddy Bears indumentum is beautiful. I enjoy indumented leaves too. The bottom of these are indumented too but white. Seed grown from 14-507, (brachycarpum x galactinum) X [(yakushimanum x rex ssp. rex) x rex ssp. rex)], John Weagle, NS, Canada. John is on this board.

Re: Rhododendron & Azalea Flowering - Spring 2016
My father was born in Missouri. Hot and humid in summer for any tropical. Its a wonder Rhodos don't mind the heat. Anne any of the giant leafed Rhodos bred into large flowers? I have an old Sunset magazine (someplace) from the early 70's of those being sold in northern cal specialty nursery- giant foliage.

Rhododendron & Azalea Flowering - Spring 2016
Tim - nice white indumentum in those photos. I have two 'Spellbinder' on order for Spring 2017. Below are photos of that one.
Stan - yes - it is hot and humid here and I am trying to grow rhododendrons and other things. I do not know of large-leaf rhododendrons with large flowers, that I can recall. Perhaps 'Spellbinder' might fit into that category.

Hi Anne, spellbinder is a great Rhododendron. That's Bruce Clyburn in the bottom photo who is a wealth of information regarding big leaf Rhododendron. I have some seedlings growing from Bruce's hybrid of Nepal x rex.

Rhododendron & Azalea Flowering - Spring 2016
Hi Tim - when I saw Bruce Clyburn's photo in the ARS Journal some time back with 'Spellbinder' I wrote to him about a source for it. That started my quest and after a very long time I now have a source who is growing two plants for me from cuttings from their home garden. Bruce was very patient with me during our correspondence.

Nice selection. I too am a rhodo/azalea nut, but have next to no room to grow any seriously. Do you have R. prunifolium in your collection? It is one of my favorite deciduous azaleas.

Rhododendron & Azalea Flowering - Spring 2016
Hi Tom, Yes - I have one R. prunifolium which I obtained from Carolina Native Nursery in North Carolina. It has not bloomed yet, but is about 15" H x 18" W. Perhaps not enough sun, but not sure. Wish you could find room to grow your favorite azaleas & rhododendrons. Have you considered planting in pots? Is that possible in your climate? What azaleas and rhododendrons do you grow now?

Rhododendron & Azalea Flowering - Spring 2016
Hi Tom - I understand about limited space in Japan, but you have given me more background than I previously had about that situation. You have a wonderful selection of the native azaleas. I like the yaks, and have several of them - Mist Maiden, Ken Janeck, Koichiro Wada, Phetteplace Form and Pink Parasol, plus some hybrids derived from yaks. I will look closer at my prunifolium this week and see if I have flower buds. It is under high shade - mostly morning sun. I have 5.1 acres but most of that is woods. My house lot is about 2 acres and a good part of that is utilized for garden space. This photo shows part of my planted space. More has been added since this was taken. I prefer not to plant in beds or all bunched together. The shape of the shrub, its foliage, etc. need to stand alone.
