Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
I dont know if you in rainy climates know this but a non trunking tree fern- even with adult fronds,is easy to keep here. Once they trunk? Its like I cant water them enough..everyday isnt enough. It get worse by the year. I should dig up C.brownii..its just a runt. To think it was off to a fast start 10 years ago..now going backwards. yes,I water it.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thanks Boris and Mau, you could almost say that tree fern culture rejuvenates you! So just go on here with this hobby Stan, I know it can be very dry in California, but that's no reason to not have a good trunk growth! I get the ferns every day soaked from the growth point, but also the soil under the tree ferns should always be moist. I consume on average 8 months per year 400 liters of water every evening. the rainfall is + - 750/800 mm per year in the Netherlands, but not sufficient for large tree ferns! Eduard.

Dear Eduard, my congratulations on your birthday and 20 years with tree ferns, my favorite plants! You made fantastical work! Very beautiful pictures, pretty sure birthday party in your private "cloud forest" was great!
In your honor I gave name of my Dicksonia squarrose - "Eduard":)

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Hi tree fern lovers, here is my latest update of this year.
This year was a good year for the tree ferns of temperature but to dry, I had to give a lot of water, luckily I had this year groundwater at my disposal!
Also my good places to put tree ferns are scarce. I had to be creative and have fortunately devise a good solution.
I'm also stopped expanding the collection, have too much. I got the double tree fern species first discarded, also think this is not enough the most cyatheas grow very big and I will have to make difficult choices!
I start from the living room to the veranda with tropical palms to the garden,
The C spinulosa grows well, not too big but nice,
D. fibrosa with green trunk've removed the skirt ! ,
Summer photos of the C.medullaris,
And now late Oktober in the rain,
We come to the New Caledonian species, they also make nice trunks,
And the fernborder with in the middle the C.atrox var. atrox,
Situated between the B.brasiliens,
The C.brownii. var. [Aussie Larrikin '] is also doing well they have little space to grow well,
And C. australis coming back good after root pruning last year,
Looking back to the house,
3rd garden area with C. c. revolvulum,
Blechnum tabulare working on his late 2nd flush,
D.squarrosa trunk growth well,
D. antarctica it continues to do well in the old pot,
4th part where I have created the new space, about 7 sq m, old situation,
Unfortunately there fit not many tree ferns on it!, only two being C.viellardy and C.cooperi from La Reunion,
What should have been C. glauca from La Reunion from spores but grow as cooperi as Steve told grown into a beautiful cooperi species,
And the C. viellardy,
For C. cooperi I found a new place, there should be pruned even more from the trees for better growth,
And already the last images of this update from within 2nd floor
The tropical tree ferns stand for a while in the warm conservatory.
The mamaku,
Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Eduard - Marvelous ferns and photos.
I can hardly belive you manage to achieve such sizes in relatively small pots. My D. antarctica here has grown well over the past year but is already in a 50cm pot and it weighs a fair bit, having just moved it inside due a threat of the first frost (+1c). Tmorrow it goes back out for a huge rainstorm. I don't want to increase the pot size for a few years and wonder what you think of top-dressing with rotted leaves frequently. I think next year I will have to add automatic watering and mist several times a day as the real growth flush doesn't really start until late July here and see no reason why it shouldn't grow quickly from late May onward. The last frond came out 10 days ago.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Eduard - Stunning, and as inspirational as ever!
John in Halifax - Does your D. antarctica continuously produce fronds all through the growing season? Could you post a photo of your plant?
Cheers
Andy

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
From what I can see, there could be room to expand your collection rather than cutting it back. they're now at a height when underplanting is an option. Ok, so overwintering could be a problem

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Hi Gary, I use all the good spots out there in semi-shade, more good space is not there, for smaller plants for the understory have no place to store it in the winter in the greenhouses, everything is full! I would be able to choose to put more plants in the ground, but we have a colder climate here, and it is too expensive to protect everything Other open spaces have full sun and that burn the tree ferns literally away. I have everything for 90% in pots and can store everything so quickly, and I have the ability to create other composites in the garden, as I have in winter a north European garden and a subtropical garden in the summer. And I have on this subject ever talked with Steve Pope, "it would be ideal to convert a large greenhouse on the garden", but unrealistic and too expensive, we have to make choices Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns after 40 years
Thank you Jose, with such a reaction is certainly nice to share my experiences with the tree ferns here!
Here one I forgot! The C. milnei, he stood in the fern border and not see properly, have it removed for the photo shot,
The trunk gets a nice base now,
And an autumn shot of the C. medullaris.
Eduard.
