Re: Sydney weather
The minimum last night at Observatory Hill was 26.4c at 11:08pm. At 3:00am it was a bizarre 29.3c. At Penrith the minimum was 28.6c at 4:40am. I note in the forecast that next Tues night the minimum is going to be 26c. wtf?

Re: Sydney weather
Last night was a real stinker. The low was 28c at 23:00 then it kept getting warmer during the early hours. It was 31.2c by 06:00 then reached a high of 38.1c at 09:30. Then a southerly change brought some much-needed relief. At Penrith it reached an astounding 45.2c before the change arrived there.

Re: Sydney weather
Another ridiculously warm night. Two nights ago the low was 27c; last night it was 26.2c at 3:55am. Now it is 5:00am and already gone up to 28.3c.

Re: Sydney weather
Nobody has ever seen a summer like this. Temps were again in the 43c-45c range in any suburbs away from the coast and tomorrow is forecast to be the same.

Re: Sydney weather
Today Observatory Hill reached 36c but out at Richmond it reached 47.0c and Penrith 46.9c. It is rare for it to be this hot in the Sydney Basin although Richmond did reach 47.8c once a long time ago. Even the far west of the state struggled to exceed these temps; Ivanhoe reached 47.6c

Re: Sydney weather
It has cooled down to normal for a few days but heat will build again toward the weekend. We are looking at low 30s near the coast and high 30s in inland suburbs Fri to Sun.

26.5c on Sunday was a record temperature for July. It's also been a very dry July; in fact, most of the year has been dry after March was a record wet month for areas just south of Sydney such as the Illawarra.

Yesterday was very windy. My Acacia stricta split at the base; luckily this species only grows to about 8 feet. Nevertheless, that's it for me as far as acacias are concerned; I'm fed up with them. I used to have a big A. fimbriata that kept losing branches.

Re: Sydney weather
September is normally our driest month with 68.4 mm but this Sept has seen only 0.2 mm so far at Observatory Hill with only a few days to go. Add to that the July-Sept total of 24.4 mm - about one-tenth of the average - and it is no wonder everything is looking brown.

Re: Sydney weather
Penrith recorded 47.3c today: a record for the Sydney area (Penrith is the hotspot of the Sydney Basin) Even Observatory Hill reached 43.4c, which must rank in the top few hottest days.

Re: Sydney weather
Inland NSW had the coldest low temperatures for over a decade. Dubbo had its coldest morning in 26 years at -6c; many other towns had the lowest readings since 2002. Generally, the highland towns had minimums between -10c and -7c, whereas out on the plains it was generally -5c to 0c Many areas of Sydney were frosty as well, west of about Strathfield to Hornsby.

"Generally, the highland towns had minimums between -10c and -7c" Phil, you surely don't mean areas like Katoomba? Wouldn't that be near their all time record low? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katoomba,_New_South_WalesI guess the native tree ferns can survive having their tops burnt once every few years? I found an article about the Australian drought by googling for it: https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/22/australi ... index.html but the American media, at least, doesn't seem to be saying much about it. Haven't seen anything on television news.
