As with many Cycads, they are getting very scarce in South Africa and with all the poaching, most are now off the beaten track and out of view to the average person.

Looks like you saw a lot of South Africa Phil!
Here are a couple of picture of Encephalartos friderici-guilielmii I took in 2011 on the Policeman's Helmet, Royal Natal National Park. From your photographs, it looks like you were in a similar area. It's a fantastic place and I'd love to go back!
