The highest Cyatheas australis in Europe (Sintra, Portugal)
Hello,
Again another trip to Portugal. This time, and it's the fifth time, the beautiful town of Sintra, a World Heritage, with its wonderful palaces and gardens. To my English friends; visited by Lord Byron. Hundreds of tree ferns, beautiful palm trees, bromeliads, ...., and incredible gigantic trees ... a wonder. Maybe we should do some traveling together there. I know really spectacular places.
Cyathea australis, more than 150 years old, Jardines de la Condesa.
Mau
More shoots, antárticas too.

It looks increíble, Mau! Do you think the C. australis are self-seeding?

Thats a rare tree fern here in the States. The only I've seen in the bay are are at a local University in Hayward. They are about 60 years old and the largest is about as tall as the one with the man in blue. They have a great pattern on the trunk. Reminds of a Phoenix silvestris palm. Also,to live to the 60 years it had to have survived two deep freezes. Once in 1972 dipping to -8C,the other in 1990 -5C. Cold!

Josh76, these ferns belong to the so-called helechal of the Countess. During the 19th century, many tree ferns were planted for the taste of the time, as in England. I have seen that Antarctic and Cooperi are naturalized, I suspect Australis also.
Stand, in Sintra there may be cold winters but the sea is nearby and softens as well as providing some humidity.
The man in blue is me and my height is 1.85m. Calculate the height, they are spectacular.

The largest are just spectacular. All green fern gardens- more or less all green- are so soothing. A Tree fern garden just has je ne sais quoi? to it. I'm very glad I fought..fought!- to keep mine alive through the drought and family grumbling. I watched some of the larger tree ferns in town just turn into stalks.

Thanks for sharing Mau, that makes me feel good to see the beauty of our beloved plants I had serious concerns about my plants this morning, we had a sudden freezing weather last night! Luckily no damage was observed Eduard.
