Re: What's your plant of the moment?
Tom Miltonia hybrid are quite easy to buy here in the UK most seem to originate from The Netherlands around £7 for some lovely colours I quite like the distinct colour change on this one they are labeled Cambria. I see from a little reading that they are not a natural hybrid but were originally created by the Belgian Charles Vuylsteka around 1930 under the name Vuylstekeara Cambria hence the name I am guessing with todays technology they can be produced far more easier than back then. I have not seen the orchid you posted for sale here, a nice thing, though we are going to the first alpine show of the year this weekend and orchids will be for sale.

Re: What's your plant of the moment?
Martin, nope, no need to have symbiotic fungi around. This one is easy in fact, but cannot take too much cold, say down to -5 C, and it is winter growing and flowering to boot. That said, there are many species in this genus, including some that grow in cold climates. Check out this site, it is the definitive place to get information about them on the web: http://www.ophrys-genus.beKev, yeah, they've been making those Miltonia crosses forever it seems. Pretty remarkable since in those days there was no asceptic technique developed yet - they were just sowed directly into the open environment! They are a bit garish for my tastes, but I do like the pastel colors of your plant very much. There are nurseries in Europe that offer these for sale, and a number of species are cold hardy to at least -15 C, so see if you can score a few. All will need full sun conditions in your climate, just like Bletilla. An alpine flower show sounds great, so please do post pics of you trip.

This is either Fiesta or possibly Mardi Gras. A very slow growing Aeonium. It took a full year to get its color back. When I started with it,it was sort of greenish with some color mixed in. I was told they hate hot summers. Better for those with mild summers.

Last year I picked up this podophyllum which only had a couple of scruffy leaves. With some decent compost mulch, I am really pleased with how it has responded.

Re: What's your plant of the moment?
That's a great looking plant Martin, good find!
If I had to choose just one plant that I could keep forever I think without too much hesitation I'd keep my Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'..................starts into growth very early in the year and then it's a talking point for anyone that sees it right into November, such value for money.
Not yet in full beauty, but well on the way.......
I think it looks good in a black pot too....
Once the leaves are longer and spilling down the side of the pot it will look great.
Yes, my good old Hakonechloa, probably my favourite plant, oh except for perhaps Ophiopogon planiscarpens 'Nigrescens'..............and oh, yes........etc.

Hi Bill
Your Garden's looking great!, I especially like the look you've got there with the Laburnum and the red leaved Prunus.
Your Cornus controversa looks amazing, just the plant for the garden in spring....keep up the good work!

At the moment?
All the hardy orchids, for sure! Cyps, Calanthe and Pleione are doing their thing now and Bletilla will soon follow.
My favourite Viburnum is the repeat flowering V.plicatum 'Watanabe', a real stunner!.

Re: What's your plant of the moment?
Illicium floridanum - interesting contrast between flowers and leaves aroma, both are very original. Flowers odor is sometimes indeed like "wet dog" or remind me "crushed swamp grass". On the other hand, nice leaves fragrance is considered in literature as strong Anise or Licorice aroma, but from my point of view rather as a mixture of conifer and something tropical, like Tamarillo fruit - really like it!
Mine (just bought) is flowering now.
