Rhododendron rex
Thanks, Tim. Just got 10-3/10" rain in 36 hours. Hail on 4/26/17 knocked very many small pieces bark off all the pine trees. Wind almost daily. It is a challenge here. No blooms on species. Here is 'Peach Cloud' on 4/26/17 before the hail.

Rhododendron rex
Tim - here is the pea-sized hail on 4/26/17.
I also posted a bunch of photos of species new growth on the "New Growth on Rhododendrons" page on this Forum.

Tim - you asked about blooms. Here is another - Rhododendron yakushimanum 'Pink Parasol' (with bee) 4/26/17 before the hail.

Re: Rhododendron rex
Peach Cloud is a beauty. Your hail storm looks like it lasted a long time with that accumulation. I hope your damage was not too significant. Thx for the Yak bloom photo.

Rhododendron rex
Hail damage was very minimal, Tim. Hail lasted maybe 15 minutes at the most. Some new growth on the Baltic Ivy got broken off, but not much. Flowers and leaves look okay on the Rhododendrons and other shrubs, and most flowers don't last long anyway.

Rhododendron rex
Here is Rhododendron rex ssp. fictolacteum - new growth 5/5/17.
Some insect bored into the growth buds on my R. hodgsonii, preventing them from opening. I cut off what was left of the buds. Next spring I will bring R. hodgsonii up to the house sooner.

Rhododendron rex
Good news. On 5/10/17 I posted here that some insect bored into all 4 growth buds on my R. hodgsonii. Here is a picture of R. hodgsonii before that happened. The four growth buds were in four locations on the plant.
I cut off those damaged growth buds and now there are four new large growth buds emerging - three in one location and one in another location. Nice outcome, provided the damage doesn't take place again. I have since moved the hodgsonii out of the woods and close to the house.

Rhododendron rex
Tim - all nice species hybrids there - they appear to have some height to them.

Re: Rhododendron rex
Not much height yet, perhaps 1.5 FT (0.5m) on some. They may be more attractive plants next season.
Here's the R. rex in my garden.

Rhododendron rex
Tim - I really like that R. rex. Mine from the RSBG has matte finish mature leaves. Others I have seen, including yours, have a glossy finish, which I much prefer. Do you think that is a varietal difference?
Do you pinch the growth buds on your species Rhododendrons to encourage branching?

Re: Rhododendron rex
I received the rex from RSF in the spring of 2013 do this will be its fifth growing season. I'll try to find the catelog number to see if it matches yours. I have not punched yet.
