Rhododendron rex
Thanks, Tim.
I will look up my catalog # on the rex ssp. rex and share that with you here.
My hodgsonii and falconeri are pushing out growth buds, but it is a SLOOOOOW process for the leaves to emerge.

Re: Rhododendron rex
Anne - it does appear we have different forms of rex. The rex I purchased from RSF was from the spring 2013 catalog. Mine appears to be grown from seed, see below.
rex ssp. rex Large erect evergreen shrubs or trees which can attain heights of up to 45 ft. in the wild. The extremely attractive leaves are up to 18 inches long, deep green above with a thick gray to buff indumentum beneath. A beautiful and impressive species blooming in late spring with numerous (up to 30) white to deep pink flowers in a large inflorescence. These are grown from a hand- pollinated cross between two of our best forms here in the RSBG. (−5\R1\5) RSBG $16.00

Rhododendron rex
Tim nice seedlings and the kesangiae is lovely. Thank you for looking up your information on the rex.
Here is the plant tag from my rex ssp. rex - different description. Usually what is on the tag is also what is shown in the catalog.
Bob Zimmerman from Chimacum Woods Nursery is going to supply me with a rex ssp. rex grown from garden seed with the glossy foliage and well branched. Will post a photo here when I have the plant.

Re: Rhododendron rex
Your hybrids are a joy to behold Tim. Macabeanum has such a beautiful leaf. It stands to reason anything crossed with it will not only get big leaves but beautiful detail to them

Re: Rhododendron rex
Beautiful plants, Tim and Anne! My rex' new growth was totally munched away by vine weevils last year. Seemingly, the nematodes did their job, as I didn't find any weevils this spring.

Steven - Which Steinernema did you use for weevils?

Re: Rhododendron rex
Hi John! They came labelled as Heterorhabditis sp. Can't say more. Additionally, I gave it a proper soaking with Careo this spring.

Re: Rhododendron rex
I've used Heterorhabditis as well and it works very well. Keeping the soil evenly moist so they proiferate especially at weevil hatching time can be a challenge near trees.

Re: Rhododendron rex
Too hot today and this Rhododendron got damaged. 94F (34.4C). It does not receive any direct sun until 3:30. Just too hot and sunny. Perhaps all the cloudy days the past few weeks contributed to its lack of direct sun tolerance. Sun coming from the right side.

Rhododendron rex
Tim - sorry to see what the heat did to that Rhododendron. We are in the 80s currently, but that will change tomorrow or the next day. Afternoon sun is more challenging to Rhododendrons than morning sun.
