Xeronema callistemon---any updates?
Hi all, I looked in the site index and last someone spoke of this Xeronema species was 2015. Maybe new members have wonderful specimens? Maybe Kev is secretly flowering one? I killed a tiny one a few years back. Maybe California has some large ones? Let's Xeronema chat!!

Hi Ted sadly Kev is not secretly flowering one given a flower you guys would be the first to see it....probably before Jackie I remember first seeing pictures of Michael Prime's plant in Ireland (where has he gone) what a beauty I seem to remember him saying it took 7 years to flower. So in 2012 I bought one while down in Cornwall from and thought I would soon get it to flower. So 5 years later how many flowers have I had, not a one, propagation from the main plant just one survived from many attempts this I gave to Charles Wychgal? Note to self stop repotting it it does not need it! The plant to the right is not a Xeronema This is the picture of Michael's that set me off

Re: Xeronema callistemon---any updates?
Thanks Kev! Great pictures! When you say you propagated----did you tease apart clumps like dividing? Sorry to hear about the zero flower status but you are young! Still lots of time. I wonder what Maurice in NZ is doing----I think he had one. That specimen of Michael's is certainly an inspiration! I think one web site claimed it could take -5 C----sounds optimistic. Do you overwinter your's in a greenhouse? Well I will hopefully find another one sometime. Really would like to visit NZ one day. Thanks again!

Ted yes teasing off looks easy but all the leaves you see on mine are off one stalk so they always come away with no roots it does stay in the greenhouse.....one day!

They are rather shy to flower here in California too, although there are two mature specimens at the UC Berkeley Botanic Garden that do bloom every year. I've had some in the garden for over 10 years, with no blooms yet. Suncrest Wholesale Nursery here in Watsonville, California used to sell it, but stopped as they couldn't get their crop imported from New Zealand to bloom either.

Re: Xeronema callistemon---any updates?
Out and about in Cornwall last weekend and saw no less than two in flower. The first here at the Minack Theatre, which must be about the perfect spot for one, given that it is perched on the edge of the world.
The second was going over so I didn't bother taking a picture but Steve Mules told me about it and my curiosity was piqued. Almost unbelievably it was in a concrete planter outside a pizza restaurant in Porthleven, right on the hardbourside. It surely couldn't be random?

Re: Xeronema callistemon---any updates?
Thanks for posting Paul does the plant seem a little stressed to you. From the few pictures I have seen of this plant flowering the leaves seem a little on the yellow side maybe it needs a little harsh treatment to stimulate it into flowering. I hope it does not need salt laden winds as that is something I am going to struggle replicating here 90 miles from the nearest coast.
Tom Huson's massive plant looked as green asgreen could be the same as mine on a much lesser scale = no flowers

Thanks Paul! Another reason to visit Cornwall some day. I wonder how Xeronema is viewed by gardeners in NZ.
