Rhododendron caloxanthum
Rhododendron caloxanthum Royston is no easy customer to grow but here it is in Lunenburg, Nocva Scotia looking the picture of health. It replaces the large rex that was moved to Annapolis Royal. This is the Royston form with its notable blue foliage, a selection of Ted & Mary Greig of the former Roystoin Nursery on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It's been a great year for the Meconopsis barely visible behind the rhodo - cool temps, a bit of heat now and again and plentiful rainfall, a welcomed relief from last year's extreme drought, the flowering period must surely be the longest in awhile. Apologies for the poor colour quality of the Meconopsis photo, the small-flowered one is really an intense dark blue, 'Mrs. Jebb' I believe.
Lastly a well-grown R. williamsianum nearby. A hooror to grow in this climate - tender and sibject to ice damage.
john - +15c, overcast & foggy.

Re: Rhododendron caloxanthum
Beautiful shape to this rhododendron and colour. I have Oreotrephes blue calyptus with similar foliage. Mine may be a bit more blue (maybe photo) as i've noticed colour looks different from photo to photo. Yours though is very compact and I love this!

Re: Rhododendron caloxanthum
Mo - We grow a few R. oreotrpehes forms including one selected here in NS. Have had my radar tracking 'Bluecalyptus' but no luck so far. Would love to see a shot of yours.
This is R. oreotrephes 'Exquisetum' grown locally.

Re: Rhododendron caloxanthum
Loving the purple stems. I also like middle colour to the leaf, some rhododendron like sphaeroblastum have this!
I can never take a picture of blue calyptus which captures the real colour not through a camera. I took this pic a few weeks ago. I came across pentland in another garden but not too enamoured with that tbh
