Re: Established Queen Palm In Christchurch, New Zealand!
It’s a bit of a long story with the Dypsis at the gardens, I have been very unlucky and I somehow feel guilty about it!
At the end of the first summer after plantation, the plant produced a new frond and I thought it was not a bad result for a start. It went through the first winter with very little damage even with negative temperature. During the second summer (February 2017), the palm suddenly started to drop its fronds one after another. I couldn’t find anything wrong with the foliage so I decided to dig a deep and narrow hole to have a look at the root system to find out... 2 things with horror!! First, a small/unnoticed leak in the irrigation system at 30 cm deep was sending water straight into it. Second, a part of the container bag was left under the plant by the company that did the planting(please, no comment) and trapping water from the leak. I decided to dig the plant out to take off the left over bag, break the soggy soil and improve drainage. At that time I could see that the roots were starting to rot so I applied a systemic fungicide and replanted the palm. I gave it a little seaweed fertilizer and watered it with caution. Now, I’m left with one unopened green frond and the spear. The spear has grown a bit but it looks dry and there is mold on it, saying that it’s not coming out. I keep on applying some liquid copper on it to keep it clean and I have tried the hydrogen peroxide trick too. I can’t think of anything else to do now, I just wish the weather could help but we had a cooler summer, a wet autumn and a gloomy winter…not to mention what we are getting now!! I just hope it survives!!!
Otherwise I agree with you, Dypsis decipiens require a fair amount of constant heat. Every time we had 22dgr and more I could notice growth on the spear. I’m aware of better location for a Dypsis but we have guidelines to follow regarding our plants collections.
I have a few more species of hardy palms growing in the nursery for the future fortunately.
How are your palms doing this winter?

Re: Established Queen Palm In Christchurch, New Zealand!
Okay guys - ultimate test coming.... my two queens just saw -5.5C this last weekend (22F). Saturday morning was around -2, Sunday morning -5.5 and this morning around -3. Each of these mornings was followed by a clear sunny day and temps around 10 degrees, today is supposed to get up to as high as 15.
One of them (the one in the pics earlier in this thread) is better sheltered, nearer the house, I would think it would have only go down to about -4, but the other is quite exposed.
Seriously hoping that damage will be lessened by the use of two different frost spray methods I've been using!
How long does foliage damage take to show?

Had to look that up. Its about as warm as Los Angeles, matching in winter and summer temperatures. But,with half the sunshine. No wonder Banglows can look so worn here in summer..they really like a cloudy mild day.

Re: Established Queen Palm In Christchurch, New Zealand!
Stan another difference is that fruiting coconuts are not uncommon in that part of NE NSW, I think they are a hard grow in SoCal. Lismore gets cold nights on occaison due to being in the bottom of a big gully, I doubt it would ever be frost-free due as a result. The nights are surprisingly cold there in winter compared to nearby places. see here; http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/IDCJD ... test.shtml Lismore daytime highs so far this month have been 20-29C (like summer here!), but nights have ranged from 1-8C (my place in the same time span the night lows have ranged from 7-13C). My in-laws place was about half an hour drive away from Lismore and frost-free. I love NE NSW but if I lived there I would need to live on the coast where the sea moderates both the heat and the cold. Mainly the heat! I still get nightmares about some of those heatwaves (38C overnight low and stupidly high dewpoint? No thanks!). Stan sometimes I get confused when people from USA talk about 'freeze' and 'frost'. I guess down here we use the terms almost the same way, what exactly do you guys mean from these terms? LA hasn't had a freezing temp since 1979 but almost every year the IPS people talk about frost damage in the area, what does this mean?

Re: Established Queen Palm In Christchurch, New Zealand!
Update on the queens - pretty good.
The one in the more sheltered spot is untouched (only some slight yellowing of one of the frond tips which was starting to happen anyway due to winter). The main spear has already started pushing out a little more thanks to several days in the late teens and 20's here.
The other one out the front which I bought down from North of Auckland is in a more exposed location and slightly more worse for the wear. The oldest frond has quite significant browning on some of the leaves but still is largely green, the newest frond has a smattering of brown spots but otherwise fine. The biggest spear is holding up well and looks ready to open, however.....
The smaller spear appears to have flopped open with high winds and the young green leaves are all flopping down. These leaves look perfectly healthy and there is no sign of any spear pull or anything, just obviously couldn't hack some strong winds which is strange.
How do I treat this - will it pull through?

Hi Gezzachc,
I never worry about things like spears opening funny, they always seem to come right.
There are heaps of great Queens in Rotorua, you guys would not be colder than Rotorua would you? This whole discussion is interesting in that regard, I would have thought Queens would be easy in CHCH.
