West Cornwall 10th September very rare plant fair!
Just in case anyone doesn't know yet but we are repeating our plant sale at Tremenherre near Penzance in West Cornwall. 10 am 'til 2.00 pm on 10th of September A tradition is that we offer some plants previously never offered before?!!! My attempt will be the "true" Dahlia purpusii from Chiapas in Southern Mexico This is remarkable in that it looks like a Hydrangea but produces a deep pink Dahlia flower! Could it be that I have been growing both Dahlias and Hydrangeas for way too long? should get out more? Hopefully John and Chad will rise to the challenge

Re: West Cornwall very rare plant fair!
Mark,
You set the bar very high.
is listed as 'possibly extinct'.
Just how rare do you want to go?!
My offerings this year are depleted by the 'bad' B&Q compost having killed off my main seed raising batches.
I can only manage 'uncommon' this year!
Chad.

Re: West Cornwall very rare plant fair!
Would love to go but just too far away. Strangely Chad, it was B and Q compost in which the red Musschia seeds from Charlie germinated for me like cress and supplied numerous people with plants! Obviously a compost of extremes. That said, I haven't used it since your report.

Martin,
Last year Verve won medals!
This year it has changed in composition though not in labelling on the bags.
B&Q's list the problems. Go to the reviews at the bottom of the page and click 'sort' to 'lowest to highest' you can see how many people have had trouble this year.
Serves me right for going for the cheapest and most convenient supplier!
Chad.

Re: West Cornwall very rare plant fair!
For anyone who can make this plant fair on the 10th September, it will be well worth calling in. Rarities guaranteed from the various tables and stands! Plus you get to see one of the finest gardens in the country.
I intend to be there again this year. I've been struggling with Lyme Disease (from a tick bite sustained whilst gardening - stay safe out there folks) and have neglected one or two batches of plants, but will still have plenty of interesting things to bring along.

Re: West Cornwall very rare plant fair!
Kev, I had the same issues as Chad had with th B and Q compost with the Wyevale stuff. Lost quite a few plants - especially young or more sensitive plants. This year I have been buying Homebase's J Arthur Bowers £6.88 for 120L which is good value. So far have found results good and the texture seems nice. Apologies for continuing to pollute this thread with compost tales!

Re: West Cornwall very rare plant fair!
Hi Ben, hope you recover quickly, very serious threat to people working outside nowadays.
Andy, still trading but doing shows and selling off-site; hopefully a new site coming after a "restructuring" of the business?
I am still mixing my own compost. Using peat, bark and loam. Massive upset in loam supply when Greenore Mendip loam stopped trading! Took a long while to find a good quality sterilised loam to replace the Somerset product. Eventually found a supply of Kettering loam which although a finer grade than I am used to seems to fulfil the role. The inclusion of a good loam increases the availability of essential minerals and acts as a wetting agent; peat only composts are difficult to re-moisten and when fertilisers run low just give up. A good loam is also sufficient to buffer the acid levels of Sphagnum peat. Bark is also useful in that it lifts the AFP of the compost and has some anti-fungal properties.
If anyone is interested I will take a few pots of compost to Tremenhere on the 10th of September.........

Re: West Cornwall 10th September very rare plant fair!
Perhaps we need a thread about compost!! Interestingly Mark, I had a great Saurauja subspinosa from Hardy Exotics which did really well until I repotted it and then it grew steadily weaker until it died. Last time I was there, they said they grow it in just bark! Perhaps we try too hard with our mixes - I have just been told by an agave expert friend of mine that the best thing to root the offsets in is ... Cat litter!!! I will give it a go.

... but not any old cat litter. Tesco Low Dust'
or if you prefer coarser granule size, Sanicat from Pets At Home.
I've been using it for a few years now - on its own for rooting cuttings (it is sterile) and as a soil ameliorant. The coarser grade seems a very good medium for bromeliads.

Re: West Cornwall 10th September very rare plant fair!
I’ve been pottering around in the poly tunnel to see what I have.
I should have [in small numbers];
Callianthe tridens [AKA Abutilon tridens] Dendroseris litoralis Dendroseris marginata Manihot grahamii [all gone - was someone waiting for me to post?] Solanum atropurpureum Solanum pyracanthum Solanum quitoense Sonchus palmensis
They are all in very small numbers. Reserve in advance if you want something.
Chad.
